I recently installed Opera 7.5 and I'm having a problem connecting to the internet. I have I.E. 6 and Avant installed on my pc and they both connect automatically, what's the deal?

Do you have a firewall? I don't remember having to set or change anything else when I switched to Opera.

Since IE works, also Avant which I think is an IE shell, I would look closely at firewall settings. Maybe the firewall allows only IE to access the net.

Keeping in mind I don't know anything about XP's firewall, that's just a guess. Post back when you find the solution; I've seen this question a couple of times before and so far no one has had a good answer.

There really isn't any settings that can be changed in xp's firewall. I also have mozilla installed and that program has no problems accessing the internet. The only thing that can be changed is to allow internet connection sharing, which I tried with no luck. If you find out the problem let me know, or if you have any other suggestions.

Suggest you open Opera Browser, Click File, go down to Quick preferences, and Preferences. Check both and see if there is anything that looks "funny ".

Looking through preferences in Opera is a good idea. It's under the Tools menu now. I'm not sure there's anything in there about net connections, though, and the default settings have always worked for me.

You could try temporarily shutting down the firewall. That will tell you something - it either is or isn't a firewall problem. Probably isn't.

Last resort try reinstalling Opera. Maybe even download it again in case something got corrupted.

I checked all the preferences & quick preferences and nothing looked out of the ordinary. I disabled the firewall and had no luck. I uninstalled and reinstalled and had no luck. I redownloaded the program & reinstalled it and had no luck. Would it have to do with having the program set as the default browser? Anybody have any suggestions?

It's unlikely to have anything to do with which browser is default, but you could try. When you open Opera, if it's not default it should ask if you want to make it so. IE should do that too, so it's easy to go back and forth with this.

How about some details, step by step what happens or doesn't happen? Are you on cable, dialup, or DSL?

If dialup, does Opera not call up the dialer? What if a connection is already established?

If cable, what happens if you open Opera, type a URL in the box and hit Enter?

Do you get error messages, anything? Do you have the status bar enabled, and what does it say if anything?

It's too bad this is happening. Opera is IMHO the best and safest browser of all.

Here's the scenario: I'm on a dial-up connection and Opera won't dial my server. When I'm already connected it will open. When I'm not connected It will not call up the dialer and I get a message saying; "Could not connect to proxy server, Access Denied." You see, I can use the browser when I connect to my server prior to opening the browser. My only question is why it won't dial my server?

I found this on Opera's web site (bummer!)

"Opera cannot be set up to automatically dial up you Internet Service Provider, because the program hasn't been designed to be able to initiate a dialer as it's not got its own. Opera only communicates with Windows for a windows socket (winsock) request. You'll have to manually start your dialer and dial up, then start using Opera.

"However, one thing that you can do, is make Opera communicate with Windows over a winsock request, and consequently have Windows start your dialer, by first of all making sure that your connection to your ISP, in the Dial-Up Networking, is branded "Default" in the "Internet" options found in the "Control Panel" (the exact location may vary from computer to computer), and then, in Opera, starting up a window which has a page in it that requires communication with the Internet (such as simply pressing the Go to the home page-button). This will "trick" Windows into starting your dialer. "

Edit: This might be better -
    http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=265&session=

For more, go to www.opera.com - on the right side click "tutorials" - on the right side is a search window. Search for "dial up ".

    You need cable! :D

I tried both suggestions and neither one worked. As far as designating my ISP as the default connection I always have it set to dial that particular number. I even tried your edit article from the Opera website i.e. configuring the dialer, and that still didn't work which didn't make sense because the other browsers I have installed all asked for the connection to dial. Opera was the only exception. I give up!!! Thanks for all your suggestions and if you stumble by anything that you think will work let me know.

    Hi Mick

I haven't much to add to what Samson posted from the Opera website. I also use Opera (along with Firefox and Mozilla when the spirit moves me... :) ) and personally I like the fact that I manually start the Windows dialer. That way I can jump into one of three (soon to be four) browsers. It's really only an extra click after all to having your browser dial up for you.
