I'm not sure where to post this. However. we get an e-mail so we'll start with Outlook Express. (OP = Windows XP)

OK, we get an e-mail. It is loaded with ".gif" graphics.
When we right click to "save picture as" my only choice now is a "bitmap" image.

We don't want that. Them bitmap pictures are static they just don't move !Somewhere I must have changed settings, because we could at one time save these ".gif" files as ".gif" files.

    Any suggestions.

Temporary file gone - but ........

That did not work - got no temporary files, no cookies, no history etc.

    This is awfull !

We send an e-mail to myself with a good ".gif" file and also this time a good ".jpg" file in it.

When we right click to "save picture as" there is only one choice "bitmap ".

What have we done wrong ? How do we get back to saving files as the should be ?

    Thanks

According to the MS KB article, Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format (which applies since OE shares settings with IE):
This issue may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
    1. This issue may occur if your Temporary Internet pages cache is full.
    2. This issue can occur if you have "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" selected in Tools, Options, Advanced Tab and are loading the page over a secure connection (https).

Since you have already emptied the cache (IE>Tools>Internet Options>General tab> "Delete Files" button), check the setting in #2.

    Must be something else !

Did all suggestions so far. No good.

We still right click on a ".gif" and a ".jpg" file and get no other choice but to save as a BMP.

And that ain't what we want - we want it to be what it is !

This has just started recently and we need to get back to doing what we could do before - save them gif and jpg files.

Keep suggesting - we'll keep trying - maybe we'll get it to come out right !

    Thanks

    Is there anything left ?

    Reference:

jbarker--Just checking. Do you have the same situation when you try to Save As a .gif file from an Internet Explorer window?
Did you install/uninstall any hard/software just before this happened?
In any event, since you are running WinXP, perhaps System Restore?
And then there is IE Repair Tool
    http://help.att.net/docs/howto/othe...r&platform=none

    *************************************************************
    A. Yes, on e-mail, in IE, on the internet, from a web page, anywhere.
I can receive and view a gif and jpg file.
However we have lost the ability to right click on them and save
them as is - only choice we get when "save picture as" is BMP.
It has not always been this way.

    B. Yes we did install three screensavers.

    C. We did a full system restore back to the earliest date possible (June 1, 2004).
    The screensavers are now gone.
And we still got that problem !

    **********************************************************

Next we go to that suggested IE Repair Tool.

    1. First fix was as follows:

From the Start menu, choose Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow
    Click the OK button.
Restart the computer when the System File Checker program finishes.

We did all that - everything worked Ok.

But, we still got the basic problem - that #4$# BMP only option.

    **********************************************************

So, we go to the alternate fix which was as follows:

From the Start menu, select Search, and choose Files or Folders.
Click the More Advanced Options item and ensure that there is a
checkmark beside the Search hidden files and folder option.
In the Name field, type ie.inf
In the Look in drop-down menu, click C: or the letter of the
hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search Now button. The correct ie.inf file
should be located in the Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and choose Install from
    the drop-down menu that appears.
Restart the computer when the computer finishes copying files.

Did all that - worked great - we got a good clean copy of IE
    Version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

Still cannot right click on a gif or jpg and save them as gif or jpg.

    **********************************************************

Did I do something wrong - is there anything left ?

    Thanks

How oh how oh how !

Went to the biggest computer store in the Atlanta, Ga area.
Talked to the IT expert. (some expert - he just logged on to Microsoft and quoted what we already have seem !) So much for that IT ****.
He brought up a gif file - right clicked and selected "save picture as:
and the choice was gif !

So, I come home - do the same, and the only choice I have is that ^^$$@@!! bitmap.

Microsoft must be pretty #!!(( proud of that format because it is the only thing we can get with IE.

Now I'm ready to change browsers - how ?

We even reinstalled Windows XP Pro - did not help a ##!!$$ bit.

Anybody out there got an answer for this @@!!! problem ?

You can tell I'm pretty well fed up with Microsoft !

    Thanks if you can help.

From MS KB article, Internet Explorer Saves Images As Bitmaps (.bmp Files) (I did some editing to remove the temporary internet files deletion step you've already tried):
    CAUSE
This behavior may occur if a damaged program file (for example, an ActiveX or Java object) is downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk.
    RESOLUTION
To troubleshoot and resolve this behavior....delete the files in the Downloaded Program Files folder that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so:
    3. In the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk, remove the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so:
    - On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    - Click the General tab.
    - Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.
    - Click View Objects.
The list of program files that are downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk appears in the Downloaded Program Files window.
In the Status column, note the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. Remove these files. To do so, right-click the file, and then click Remove.
    - When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes.
    - Close the Downloaded Program Files window, and then click OK two times.
    4. Save an image in Internet Explorer to test and determine if the issue is resolved.

It's also been reported that removing the "House Call Control" from the Downloaded Programs folder fixed the problem.

It's also been reported that the "SASCLH" file left over from a sasser worm removal can cause the bmp-only problem.

    Miz--Let's hope that works.
But you have solved a question I have had for some time, which is why MS had two KB articles on the subject (260650 and 810978). I never read past suggestion 1 (the same in each case) and just assumed suggestion 2 was also the same.
    Good for you!!

About ready to kill this bug !

Do not have any downloaded files.
Do not have any files named sas...(per Windows explorer and the search routine).

We have read all Microsoft stuff about this we can find, all that has been suggested - did them all - had no problems doing so - yet, that BMP is still there.

Now, we disconnected the hard drive.
Put in my old hard drive with Windows ME.
Booted up, connected the modem, got the latest Windows updates and installed them, updated the Antivirus (Norton).

Then we composed an e-mail to myself with a gif and a jpg - sent it - got it.
And the right click "save picture as" works as it should. Saved a gif and a jpg.

Checked the versions of Outlook Express and IE - they are the same on both systems.

There has to be a cause why XP Pro won't work anymore.

Anybody out there got any more suggestions ?

If not, we gonna do an F Disk - then a Reformat on this drive - install everything new - which will take days - and prerhaps that will fix what Microsoft can't identify !

When you see the "Save As" type, you are seeing a little arrow on the right to click on for a drop down menu, right?

    We got an arrow !

Yes, we do see that arrow ! And when we select it - guess what - we have no choice but BMP.

That is the problem we're trying to solve.

The file name is always "untitled "
The file type is BMP - that's all !

It should identify the file name and show the proper file type.
ME can do it - what is busted on XP PRO ?

We have installed IE again - and we have reinstalled Windows XP Pro.
We done the scanfile bit and yet it will not save except as BMP !

We gonna end this flap !

    OK, thanks to everyone.
However, there is apparently no answer.

So, we got a new big hard drive.
    Started from ground zero.

Had to do about 30 XP updates and all that.
Still got a lot of programs to reinstall.

However, so far we have not encountered that BMP problem again.

(Note: Tried one other thing before we quit - we used Norton ghost but that transferred the problem and all.)

My thoughts after all this is:
    1. The English language, written or spoken, is a very poor means of communication - yet, it is the best we have.
    2. Microsoft Windows is full of surprises and sometimes it's downright awfull - Yet, it's the best we got ! Unless you like apples - we quit them a long time ago. And Unix - oh well - parts is parts !

The end - but no solution !

jbarker--Thanks for posting back. Sorry none of the standard fixes worked. Usually this is a fairly simple problem to solve. The unsuccessful transfer using Ghost takes away the idea that it was a hardware problem--which would have been something new.
I can understand your frustration. But we understood the problem and you did your best to follow suggestions. Must be the exception that proves the rule (or whatever other sophistry applies :) ).

jbarker, I like your style! As we would say in the American South, "Ya done fixed it!"
If you don't mind saying, what is your first language? You always write eloquently in the Royal "We ". (Americans do that when snickering at the British, or in reference to Queen Victoria) There are many people on the BBS who are multi-lingual, and it amazes me how easily people transition back and forth.

    Best regards,
    Johanna

We sure hate to do this !

We sure hate to do this.
Microsoft IE has been my standard.
However we finally went to another Brouser.

Now, that just highlited that IE was not the problem with that saving a gif file and getting nothing but bmp.

    It was Outlook express.

So, how do we fix Outlook Express, once it will not save a gif as a gif or a jpg as a jpg - only bmp ?

Surely there is an answer - or do I need to quit Microsoft completly, and go to a complete new mail system ?

That not being able to fix it and having to go to a complete new hard drive and reinstall of Windows seems to be a cop out.

Even though that worked, we would like so much to reinstall that old hard drive and get back to what we used to do.

Ok, you computer experts - let us hear from you.
(Note: Read all we done so far that don't work !)
Seems we gotta go beyond those Microsoft "fix" postings to solve this !

We sure do like that statement someone posted "Usually this is a simple problem to solve." Yep - so, what's the answer ?

And as to who we is and what we speak- We is Southern - World War II veteran - like everybody - don't hate nobody - (except Germans and Japs ! ) (Beginning not to care too much for them Muslins !) We is Baptist - the real ones and all that. We worked as a Computer Applications Engineer for a major aircraft manufacturer for 37 years - been retired now for 18 years.
And being raised as a southern river rat, we don't like to be told we "can't do something ". Do you ? That is why we keep trying to get an answer to this $$### problem.

Done done a work around !

We do hate to knock Microsoft - but that system ain't cutting it !

So, we went to an entirely new Browser.
Know what ? No popups - haven't yet got the first "spyware" and all those things. The browser takes a little getting used to. But so far things work fine.

We log on to the internet and see a graphic and we can save it as it is - the bmp problem is gone.

Man, IE stinks when it comes to security ! (My opinion only !)

    ***********************************************

However, those graphics we get in e-mail and want to capture (via the right click) takes a little bit of trouble.

Seems Outlook Express is the best for composing e-mail with rich text, embedded graphics and embedded sound. (not attachments.)

But that darn bmp problem has yet to be solved.

So, we installed another e-mail program. Not great, but the graphics part is OK.

We still go to Outlook Express first to get our mail..
All mail that is just plain mail is OK.
Then, we get one with a graphic that is a keeper.

Now, we just forward that message to myself.
Switch to the other e-mail program.
    Get the forwarded mail.
And save the graphics as they are, gif or jpg !

    *************************************************

Some of you may want to know about the sound in that e-mail - if it is a goodie and you want to keep it - then how do you save an "embedded" sound ?

Easy: Just start a recording program, open the e-mail which plays the sound automatically.
And finally, edit and save your recording to suit yourself.

    ****************************************************

Unless anybody has an answer for that BMP clitch in Outlook Express, then this dog has been beat way too much.

    See ya

I had this problem before and what I did is:
right click the pic and properties.
copy the location. and paste the address into the ie address bar.
The choose "Save as" in the file menu.

Works for me. Hope you 2.
