I have an ooold box which is now getting a keyboard error when booting so can't do anything with it. Have tried swapping keyboards and also using the other keyboard port with an adapter, so am I lost? Is this a mobo problem and that's it or is there a way to bypass the keyboard error and boot anyway?

I'm on a network and could live with the box running w/o a keyboard until I figure out where to put the hard drive.

    marty,

That's a BIOS problem, as you undoubtedly know, And the function of the box is really the functions on the HDD. So if the bios can't be upgraded, I'd consider replacing the mobo or putting the HDD in another box. At least you'd still have the functions you want.

I didn't know but now that you say that it does make sense. Is it that the bios detects the keyboard failure and then overrides the normal boot from the HD?

I guess w/o the keyboard there's no way to even try and override this and let the HD boot, so the box is toast. But not, as you say the HD which is probably fine.

Only the mobo. That's not too hard to replace if you can find an equivalent online, and it's good experience, too. Things cant get any worse! :)

    VERY slim chance...

I had a motherboard that would not recognise the keyboard because of a problem with the RAM. Try removing the RAM sticks and cleaning the contactors with a soft pencil eraser. Check your motherboard manual regarding the RAM modules and if you have more than the basic set, try switching them around or just running a basic set (some older RAM needs to be installed in matched pairs).
