When I boot Windows 98 SE I get a line that reads....128 unknown error (code 5) If I press enter I am allowed to boot up.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?

    Hi hillj
Welcome to the boards! It sounds like a driver conflict to me? Have you been into device manager and checked for any conflicts, and/ or updated your drivers?

    Hi Daisy

    Thank you for your response!
I have looked into the Device Manager and found nothing unusual.
I have checked for viruses and Trojans and have not found any.
Also have reinstalled Windows and nothing has changed.
Do you have any other suggestions?

I agree with Daizy - it looks like a driver problem in the audio setup.
Has this message recently occurred ? If so, have you changed anything
or installed anything that would affect audio settings ?
Do you have backups of your system files ?
    regards

    Thanks merlin :)

hillj re-installing windows won't necessarily update your drivers for you. You might want to check around for updated ones?

This may also be worth mentioning. It may not apply to you but may come in handy for someone else further down the line. I happened to notice a "Googled Link" pointing the finger at a longshot rarer cause for this error related to Mcaffee version 4.1.60. Apparently even though you may have the product updated and loaded with the latest dat file for this version, it does (the dat file, that is) outgrow the older versioned MCAffee product. The error will occur during the dos bootup command line memory scanning done before entering windows. See:

https://knowledgemap.nai.com/phpcli... Error Messages with the Command Line Scanner

The solution is a newer version of McAffee software.

    ThanK You goddezl!
I am not sure what happened but I remember virus scan not working properly and repairing it before the problem with the code error appeared.
I have the product version of 7.0 with all the updates so this is a puzzle.
Maybe uninstalling and updating with superdat will fix the problem?
The error occurs just after the virus scan of memory at bootup.

    hold on a minute!

This little problem led me to having to wipe my c drive and reinstall windows 98. and hey-presto when i reinstalled mcafee vs and applied the latest updates it happened again. the problem clears if you delete the mcafee entry in the autoexec.bat file. however, this updatwd version simply will not run. solution - contact mcafee and get them to sort this out!!!!!! I will try as soon as i can Bother to get out of bed...
try reinstalling mcafee vs and NOT updating the latest virus definitiin files to isolate whether its the latest program version, or the latest virus file..

If you disable the line in Autoexec.Bat, the problem will go away. Go to Start\Run, type in Msconfig and press Enter. Click on Autoexec tab, and uncheck the line with MacAffee in it.

I seen to have resoved the problem with error code 5.
I appears as though there is a conflict with zone alarm and McAfee.
I uninstalled zone alarm and reinstalled McAfee with the lasted SDAT and that took care of it. No more problems. Am now using McAfee's firewall. :)

    Help!! Can't boot up win98SE

    Hi all,

Hoping you can help with my poor laptop issues.

I am having trouble booting up my sony vaio win98SE laptop. I deleted a bunch of temp files the other nite, but when i rebooted (twice) all was well. Then, yesterday, when I booted, i got "128...unknown error (code 5). "

I then got out my recovery disk and tried to do a recovery without reformatting.

No dice. Error messages there too.

Tried again, and got the following prompt:

Choose command prompt and run scanreg.

    No dice again!

I emailed sony-no help there. They advised me to 'clean the disk and try again," then also gave me a script to try using dos to run the recovery disk.

    Again, nada.

I then got a message saying that the following files were missing or corrupt: himem.sys, dbbuff.sys, and ifshlp.sys. Hoping the recovery disk would be able to fix/reinstall those, but no luck.

I went into the Setup mode, and tried to find something that would allow me to boot using the 'last known good' file. It was not there.

So, what i have is a very lovely machine that blinks maddeningly at me (yeah, i tried that prompt, and you won't let me run scanreg!) with a LOT of new files i've created yet haven't backed up yet (i know, i know).

I am terrified that the only fix will be to totally reformat my C drive....and I am sick over this!!!!!!!!!!!

Any real solutions would be great. I was excited when i saw the previous post, but unlike that lucky person, hitting enter does nothing for me.

(oh and yes, one last message came thru when i choose the confirm option: the win.com file is now missing as well.)

cyberlasagna for anyone who can help!
also: i have not loaded any new programs in forever; i have not changed settings. i have a sinking feeling that something in a temp folder was deleted when it shouldn't have been...and now i am paying big time.

    Laurie :(

    The fix

You have corrupt Virus Scanner installation. Rename your autoexec.bat to autoexec.old and reboot. Buy new virus program, the one you have is probably ancient.

Mom2boys, restoring the registry will not help you. You have a recovery CD? Do this commands at the prompt.
    C:\windows\scandisk /all /autofix /surface
    c:\windows\options\cabs\setup

In most cases those CD's copy the setup files into that folder. This will check your drive for problems and install windows, have your product key handy. Don't have one?
Do this command at the prompt.
    c:\windows\regedit /e c:\product.txt hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion
    edit product.txt

Look for the word ProductKey, with 30 letters and numbers in groups of 5 to the right of it.
If Edit.Com will not open that file, use this command instead, what you are looking for will appear on the screen, should appear first.
    type c:\product.txt | more
The | is the symbol on the keyboard that looks like two minus signs lined up vertically, usually above the \

However, the sudden disappearance of these files means one of two things, a severe drive crash, or a virus delivered it's payload.
