i often use google.com as a search engine but recently everytime i search something like...john lennon for example, the first page comes up with all advert links link "buy john lennon now on ebay" or something..

then i click next page then i get the proper results...

whats wrong? is it my comp or is it googles problem? i can use google.co.uk normally...

acidburn942--By chance, do you use the new GoogleMail? That has a feature that tracks your surfing and puts ads on the Google surf page that mirror your surfing patterns. GoogleToolbar has a Page Rank feature to track number of hits a reference gets. It may also have something to do with the ads you see. It can be turned off from Toolbar Options.
I do not use GoogleMail, but do use the Toolbar (with Page Rank off). I just tried searches on "john lennon " and john lennon. I got no ads at all (usually Google puts at least a few ads down the right hand column) on the first search and three very small ads with the second.
    Results for my first search
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q="john+lennon"
    for the second
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=john+lennon
Are you entering the same search terms as I? When you click on the links do you see more ads than I do?
P.S. Is " "buy john lennon now on ebay" " on a regular Google window? Or is this some third party window--perhaps a popup? The latter could be a sign of spyware. Have you scanned with AdAware or SpybotS&D (using up to date reference files)?

You will get vastly different results if you search "john lennon" (747,000 pages) and john lennon - sans quotes - (924,000 pages). On my search without quotes there was a group of "product listings" at the top and then the results of the search. Usually you can expect commercial adverts along the right side.

Google is afterall an advertising medium and while the results of the search is not supposed to be influenced by commercial linkages you can expect related advertising to appear but also be identified as such.

That's what makes it a free service.

At the risk of sounding flip...that's the way it is supposed to work. The same information is packaged many different ways by whoever is distributing it. So, if Yahoo has a hand in it...then they will package it their way. Google resells its search information to a number of distributors and you will get different results depending on what you use.

I believe the purest form is to use a standard browser and go direct.

By the way, have you tried A9.com...Amazon's new search engine. It is very impressive.
