I'm running Windows 2000 Professional, and I have an Epson Perfection scanner and a Kodak DC5000 digital camera. Both connect to the computer via USB. The problem is, I can't have both of them "installed" at the same time. The scanner works fine as long as it, and its software, is the only "imaging device" the computer sees. If I install the camera software, neither of them work. If I "uninstall" the scanner, the camera works. But in order to use the scanner again, I have to completely remove the camera software, including manually removing all Registry entries and deleting the (empty) directories... and then reinstall the scanner software.

The only explanation I can think of for this is that they are both TWAIN sources, and that somehow they compete with each other. But it really would be useful to be able to leave them both installed, so I can use whichever one I need without having to go through the whole tedious process every time. Any suggestions?

This is the workaround for XP - 2k may be the same although there is no mention of this specific problem in MS Knowledge Base.

While that has a few potential clues in it, it really doesn't address itself to my problem. I'm not trying to run two scanners, but a scanner and a digicam - I don't believe the digicam uses Usbscan.sys.

I tried looking at Device Mangler anyway, and discovered another interesting wrinkle. While I carefully uninstalled (using "Add/Remove Programs" from the Control Panel) everything associated with the scanner, and installed the camera software, the only "imaging device" listed in Device Manager is the scanner - and it says it's working properly and has the correct drivers and all. Now, the camera is not currently plugged in, which might account for it not showing up. But shouldn't the scanner have gone away when I uninstalled it?

This is getting more and more confusing.

Uninstalling through Add/Remove removes the software suit associated with the scanner, not necessarily the drivers. If the scanner remains plugged in it will be seen in DM and 2k probably loaded generic drivers for it as a generic USB device. Unplug it and it should not be seen in DM.

I don't think it is a problem with TWAIN - I have 3 TWAIN devices in the Windows\twain directory - Nikonscan, Agfascan and Canon EOS10D and all happily co-exist.

Tather than uninstalling the software have you tried disabling the scanner in DM when using the digicam?

I installed the scanner and used it; later, I installed the digicam and downloaded some pictures. I "unplugged" the digicam when I was done. The next time I went to use the scanner, its software did not work, and I got a "device error ". Reloading the scanner software didn't fix the problem - I had to uninstall the camera software, and manually delete registry entries and directories associated with the camera. Then, when I reinstalled the scanner software one more time, it worked.

Like PeteC I also have three TWAIN devices and using 2000 sp4. One of them is a Epson Perfection Scanner. Must be something in the camera software. As a work around if you already have some photo program use that along with a card reader.

I just took a look here as it is Kodak page for your camera. It has some links for updates, technical information bulletins and FAQ. Maybe something there that may help. Also Kodak had a recall for that camera. That is on that page too.

    Hi acelightning,

Have you checked for the latest drivers? One set may be using a different version of the same file.

You may want to check if different rescources can be allocated to one of them in Device Mangler.

I've already got all the most recent upgrades and drivers. When the recall was announced, I sent my camera to Kodak, and they fixed the potential problem and sent the camera back to me, plus an extra 12-picture card to help compensate for the inconvenience. I honestly don't know whether a card reader would help or not - I guess I'll have to find room in the budget for a reader, and try it out. Although I'd still like to be able to plug the camera into the computer without uninstalling the scanner...
