Hi, i am new to this forum so plase bear with me.

I have hundreds of picture on my hard drive (1GB) which is running Window XP, with 512 MB RAM. My computer is a AMD athlon which is just over a year old. I can access all my pictures except for picturs in a certain folder.

Most of them are .JPEGS with some .BMPS and they have the names still on the pictures and the sizes in Mega-Bytes are still there. However when I go to view them I can't. If I save a new picture into that folder I can view it but none of the old pictures. I would like to save them if I can find an answer, if not I may have to DELETE that whole folder.

Are there to many picture in one folder?

Any ideas sure would be appreciated.

oxford750 --Are you getting any error messages when you try to view these images? What happens if you open a graphics editor (like MSPaint or Irfanview) first and then either drag and drop these images into the open editor window, or click the editor's File|Open and browse to the image?
What happens if you hold down Shift and simultaneously right click on one of the problem images, click "Open With... ", scroll to a graphics editor, highlight its name and click OK at the bottom?
It does not sound like it, if you can add new images to the folder and view them without problems.
Depending on the answers to my first questions above, those problem images may have become corrupt.

    Oxford750 ...

Try moving some of the unviewable pictures to a different folder. Are you still unable to view them? What program are you using to view images?

I'm curious about why you hold the Shift key while right-clicking. When I do that the context menu opens OK, but nothing happens when I click on "Open with... ". In other words, the Open With selector window doesn't open as one would expect. Everything works as it should when I do it without holding the Shift key.

JSS3rd--Well, if you get the option "Open With..." (as opposed to just "Open ") without holding down the Shift key, then your PC works differently than mine. I run Win98.
Sounds like you expected to need to hold down Shift, too.

Well, this IS the XP forum. :D

No, I DON'T need to hold the Shift key to access the "Open With" menu and selector window. If I DO hold the shift key, I can't get to the selector window. XP vs 98? ¿Quien sabe?

So what happens when you try to move/copy one of the pictures to another folder?

Can you rename one of the pictures, say to "test.jpg ", and then try opening it?

I have to admit I've not seen this before.

Jim, you're absolutely right ... our computers DO work differently, because you're using Win98, and oxford750 and I are using XP. With XP, it's not necessary to hold down the Shift key to get "Open with... ".

With XP I get both "Open" and Open with..." whether I hold down the Shift key, or not. In either case, if I click on "Open" the image opens in the viewer/editor the filetype is set for; but, if I hold the Shift key and click on "Open with..." nothing happens.

Time to put this discussion to bed, I think. :)

JSS3rd--Well, it is oxford750's thread. Perhaps oxford750 can tell us if the problem is solved. But by all means propose a solution based on WinXP.

I meant the discussion between you and me about accessing "Open with... ". :D I certainly wasn't suggesting that we close the thread.

I've already suggested the only thing that occurs to me ... that oxford750 try moving a few of his/her unviewable image files to a different folder, and see if they can be opened there. Unfortunately, the fact that new image files placed in the suspect folder CAN be viewed makes me share your suspicion that the older files have somehow become corrupted.

'Twould be nice if oxford750 would answer some of the questions we've posed, so we could get a better understanding of the situation.

    lost picture

Sorry folks, I forgot all about this thread I posted. I am using PSP8 and picture fax viewer (from windows xp).

when I opened a picture in PSP8 it said "file type not supported ". When I opened it in picture fax viewer it said "no preview available" and copying and pasting the files to other folders did not work so I gave up and thinking that the files were corrupt and just deleted the folder. Wierd though how it happened to one picture folder and not others I have. Also that my up-to-date virus checker (mcaffe) did not pick it up.

Again sorry to all that I did forget about the thread and THANKS abunch for your help.

    Oxford750  :(

Sounds like some form of corruption - happens from time to time, but note that antivirus programs check for viruses not straightforward file corruption which can arise from many causes.

Hi, some time ago I had lost pictures and to cut a long story short I endet up going to the search Files .jpeg and looked at every file with that extension and saved the ones I wanted to keep into a new Folder and deleted the ones I no longer wanted, good opp. to have a clean out. The same with bmp files.
    Takes time but workes.
