    Hello,

Windows ME is not creating Restore Points. I CAN create them manually.

    Under:
    My Computer/Properties/Performance/File System/Advanced/Troubleshooting

"Disable System Restore" is NOT checked off.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks everyone.

I might be way off the mark but i thought to ask, do you have SpyBot S&D 1.3 installed and set to scan and fix automaticly with all file sets seleted ?
If so you should in settings uncheck both make restore point's there, that option only works for XP systems.
    If thats Not it >

How do yo know its not making restore point ? hwo long has it been since it has ?

No, I don't have SpyBot. I know it's not creating restore points because when I had a problem and tried to use System Restore there were no restore points. The last one (the only one's) is from today which I created manually.

    Thanks.

    From Mike Maltby, MVP:-

Generally the lack of automatic checkpoints is due to one of two general
reasons. Either there is no system idle time, such as when the user is running a
program like seti@home, or because a background application is fooling stmgr.exe
into thinking that the system is not idle although this is not in fact the case.
Examples of the latter utility include v4 of MotherBoardMonitor (but not v5),
Cacheman, The Cleaner (TCActive and TCMonitor), Paragon CD-Rom Emulator and
Norton's System Doctor where users have reported use of the Disk Health sensor
has prevented the creation of automatic checkpoints. NAV7 has also been
reported as causing similar problems in certain circumstances.

In writing this I am assuming that:
    a) System Restore is not disabled (System | Performance | File System |
    Troubleshooting)
    b) *Statemgr is still checked in MSConfig | Startup, and,
    c) stmgr.exe is running (this can be checked using a task manager such as WinTop
or TaskInfo or by opening Help & Support | System Information | Software
    Environment | Running processes.

Finally, have you tried making a manual checkpoint? If so was it created, if
not what was the error message?

Failing all else I think you need to analyse the various background processes
that you have running on your PC especially those launched when you boot the PC
although you can exclude those that are included by default when installing Win
    Me.

Just one last point though but not likely to be relevant to your problem since
you say you have installed all available updates check that you have installed
the "Windows Me System Restore Update" from the Windows Update site. See MS KB
Q290700 - "Checkpoints That You Create After September 8, 2001 Do Not Restore
    Your Computer "

I downloaded and installed WinTop. Yes, I can create manual restart points. System Restore is NOT disabled. StateMgr IS running. Would my firewall (BlackIce) make the system look "not idle "? Also, my anti-virus (McAfee) runs every morning around 2 AM. I'll try shutting these down tonight and see what happens. Thanks again.

At this point, I would suggest that the entire Restore folder is corrupt. To uncorrupt, you would need to delete it completely. Create a bootup floppy, and boot the computer with it, selecting without CD rom support. Then use this command.
    deltree c:\_restore
Type a Y that you want to delete, when done remove floppy, and reboot the computer. A new Restore Point should be made upon bootup.

Thanks. I'll give it a try but first I need to install a new floppy drive.

I would suggest disabling System Restore temporarily, restart the computer and re-enabling SR again.
I don't remember where to do this in WinME but I think it's somewhere in My Computer > Properties > File System.

On WinXP, disabling and re-enabling SR clears the folder.

This problem was caused for me by my scanner. The backgroud program that detects the use of the buttons an the scanner (One Touch Copy, etc) made System Restore think the computer was never 'idle' and so it never created a System CheckPoint. The solution was to remove this program from the Startup list. I now have to start my scans from the desktop. Since I did that two years ago I have not had a problem.

That's the problem w/ ME's SR. Creation of restore points in ME is totaly dependent on the system having enough "run" time - 10 or 12 hours of it - before a point is created. It needs enough "idle" time to determine what the changes are to the OS and then "backup" those changes.

    How soon we forget :)

Just an update, since my original post, 2 restore points have been created automatically.
