I am using Netscape 7.0 with Earthlink and WinXP. When I access YAHOO and click on "Finance ", only part of my stock list appears and nothing for "Recent News ". Then,I usually cannot access "Home" or anything else. Sometimes I get a notice: "Netscape Not Responding ". I have to minimize the screen, which gets me back to my Desktop View. After hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL a few times and patiently waiting, the Task Window appears and I click on the "X" square which removes the Yahoo-Finance bar from the bottom of my screen and returns normal operation. I do not have this problem when I use I.E.! How can I get Netscape to play right?

    Condoor,

Do you have both Java and JavaScript enabled in Netscape 7.0?

Your browser (Netscape 7.0) is 2 years old and obsolete. I would encourage you to upgrade to Mozilla 1.7, which should be released sometime this week, or the new Netscape 7.2 which may be released in the next week or so.

    Netscape 7.0 Not Responsding

    Ramona,

Thank you for your interest in responding. Yes, I have Java & JavaScript enabled. I know Netscape 7.0 is old but several months ago I upgraded to 7.1 and had nothing but trouble with "Netscape Not Responding" raising havoc with my mailbox so I reinstalled 7.0 and solved the problem until recently when trouble returned. I'm also having trouble, quite often, when trying to access links on the internet. I can't see that the forthcoming upgrades, including Mozilla will solve my problem. Netscape should work properly with my present setup? How about uninstalling 7.0 and reinstalling it? If you think this might help, please let me know. I would appreciate any guidance and precautions you would recommend if I do this. Also will I loose any data like Imported Bookmarks, Addresses, etc.?

    Regards,

    Jerry

    Hi Jerry,

I don't think reinstalling Netscape would benefit you, but no harm in trying. The Profile remains untouched by an uninstall, but it's always a good idea to back up the Profiles folder before doing any uninstall, or editing.

Have you tried disabling your Firewall before trying to access the Yahoo site? Also you might also disable Popup Windows, if they are set to block popups. Are you using any other type of software for adblocking, etc.?

    Hello again Ramona,

Well, I disabled the firewall and the popup windows. I also dropped Earthlink and
now use Dslextreme.com. I also upgraded to Mozilla 1.7, which included a re-installation of Netscape 7.0 to my surprise! This created quite a bit of commotion. Lost all the Imported Bookmarks and Address Book but I think this really helped clear up most of my problems. Now I notice that my Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\ has two versions: \1.4f_2003062408 & \1.7_2004061609. I would think that I could delete the "1.4f" version but in view of the problems I've had I don't want take on any new ones. Please let me now if you'd recommend deleting the "1.4f" version..............Thanks!

    Jerry

    Hi Jerry,

Wow, you did a lot of upgrading!

Are you saying that you think that the Mozilla 1.7 install included Netscape 7.0? It doesn't include anything but Mozilla 1.7. From what you are saying, I believe that Mozilla picked up your existing Netscape 7 Profile, which definitely would create chaos! This is no doubt why you lost some of your Profile data. The Release Notes are very specific about not sharing a Profile between any Mozilla, or Netscape applications.

If you have a 1.4f_2003062408 GRE folder, then you have Netscape 7.1 installed, as the Netscape 7.0 version had NO GRE folder. The 1.7_2004061609 GRE folder is Mozilla 1.7.

If I were you, I would uninstall both Netscape and Mozilla
    Delete both GRE folders
    Reboot your PC
    Install Mozilla
    Install Netscape

Ensure that you have two Profiles before installing either browser. The uninstalls will have no effect on your Profiles.

    Hi Ramona,

Hmmm..............so I have Netscape 7.1 installed?? Well, I wonder. I happened to access the Welcome Screen for Netscape and in large letters it said, "Welcome to the new Netscape 7.0 browser! ". When I access my mail box, it too indicates Netscape 7.0 at the top of the screen. Windows Explorer also lists Netscape 7.0. So, where's the ubiquitous "7.1 "?

If I still should uninstall Mozilla & Netscape what is the procedure to reinstall?
Don't I have to reinstall Netscape first (use the CD?) and then reinstall Mozilla?

    Regards,

    Jerry

    Hi Jerry,

O.K., I stand corrected, as you did say: "I know Netscape 7.0 is old but several months ago I upgraded to 7.1 .... ". Yes, I would still uninstall both Mozilla and Netscape and the two C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE folders. If the GRE folder isn't deleted when Netscape 7.1 is uninstalled, problems always seem to crop up.

As long as you have two Profiles, the order in which you install the two browsers doesn't matter.

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Hi Ramona,

Well, another problem has popped-up. I was going to do the "downloading" and decided to check things out first. I discovered that Download Accelerator Plus had disappeared! When I tried to download the free version I got a message: "DAP Initialization Error: Download Accelerator could not be loaded. Please press 'Back' button in the browser ". What do I have to do to get DAP to load?

    Jerry,

Netscape 7.0 has its own download manager, and you really don't need a third party application. I'm afraid I don't know anything about DAP, other than what I can find on their FAQ site: http://www.speedbit.com/DAP7/FAQ.asp Their support site seems a bit skimpy, but there is an email address...

How did you discovered DAP was missing?

Have you tried copying the dapop.dll file from your DAP folder to your Netscape plugins folder, and rename it to npdap.dll. This is recommended for Mozilla, and you should be able to do the same for Netscape.

You might try the folks on the Software Forum for your DAP problem. There may be someone there who has experienced your problem.

OK, here's how I discovered DAP was missing. 1. No Desktop Icon 2. No Taskbar Icon. 3. Search could not find the file. I tried to re-download it from Netscape with the results described in my previous e-mail. Subsequently, I tried to download it using IE and was able to do it with no problems! Once it was downloaded I had no trouble using Netscape again to download Internet files.
Anyhow, my "no repesponse" problems with Netscape now have apparently vanished and everything seems to be working normall. Would there be any advantages to deleting Mozilla & Netscape plus the GRE folder per your recommendation or should I just leave well enough alone. Sometimes changing Netscape results in deleting Bookmarks, addresses and mail!

    Hi Condoor,

You know what they say, "if it works don't fix it "! If you have no more problems then leave it alone, but if problems keep cropping up then I would uninstall, and start again. You will never lose any Profile data if you do frequent backups, and especially before an uninstall. See my Preventive Maintenance "Sticky" at the top of the Forum.
