On 12 Jun I used Windows Media Player for music and videos on hard drive. All was normal. I put the system in sleep mode for the night. When I brought it up WMP wouldn't work, and still won't. I've had power off and on since then. I've clicked the Desktop icon and other locations. There's no error message, just nothing happens. Any ideas? Is there something I can reset? Should I download a new version?

Did you try the executable itself? Program Files > Windows Media Player > wmplayer.exe?

In that folder should be the setup as well. Config choices:
    Upgrade newer components only
    Reinstall all components

Yep, that's one of the things I've tried, and it doesn't work. But I don't have Config. Running a Search of the hard drive finds Config in other directories. I'll try SETUP_WM.EXE. After I do a backup, just in case.

Sorry, meant: SETUP_WM.EXE configuration gives those choices.

Good idea, create a restore point before.

I ran SETUP_WM.EXE which downloaded Windows Media Setup patch and Windows Media Setup. Still nothing! But the way other things are going, I suspect there are problems in Windows. I might have to do a restore. Which I did just last month. After doing it in Nov. How can I find out what version of Media Player I have?

FYI: right click on the executable > properties > version tab.

    Lonny,

Why does the Media Player stop working? Is this a 9X problem? This must be fairly widespread if merijn has that download on his page.

    Regards - Charles

Sorry about the delay; I was away. Okay, Lonny, I downloaded WMP 9. Well, it seemed to download and it showed me an icon. I clicked on that and got a message that it wasn't installed properly and must be reinstalled. So I downloaded WMP 7, which is what I had originally. Again I got an icon, but clicking won't play anything.
Anyway, I think I'm going to have to do a restore in a few days. Third time in eight months. I restore from a CD, so everything should work. Still, if I just downloaded versions 7 and 9, where are they?

I solved the problem. The hard way. Did a full Restore. But not just for that. The whole system was crawling and crashing.
