Running Win XP Home Sp1. I am the sole user of my system and I am listed as computer administrator. I have NO log in prompt when I boot up which is the way I want it. Will changing the user name cause any problems.

I used to do it with Win 98SE with no problems, but I realize XP is so different.

What about changing the Registered USER name in Win XP Home Sp1? Would it be safe to do that?

If you mean the name that you put in when you did the original install, that is just a text string in a registry key and can be rubber ducky or pretty much anything else. Microsoft cares about the product key but not any of the other.

If that isn't what you mean, then I'm at a loss.

That's what I mean, the name used at installation which is in the registry.
    It's located here:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion

Will changing this name cause any problems? I would like to still just boot up and go, no logon as I'm the sole user of my system.

Safest way to do this - in Pro at least ....

Control Panel > User Accounts > Pick a task - change an account > Pick an Account to change > Pick on account > Pick on Change Name.

Don't know if it is the same in Home.

    PeteC,

That's not what I'm talking about. On the desktop when you right click on the icon My Computer then click on Properties, the name you see under Registered to:
This is what I'm talking about changing.

Change it if you want. You won't have any problems. I've done it myself.

Thanks, I did it with no problems. What I actually meant to say was the "RegisteredOWNER" not Registered User.
