    Hello,
My friend has a Compaq MV940 Color Monitor that quit working. I loaned her an old Gateway Monitor from my old computer. The problem is that on her Compaq Monitor had the speakers attached to the monitor. My Gateway monitor doesn't have the connections to use her speakers.

Is there any way we can get these speakers to work without her monitor. I think we need a power supply to plug directly into an outlet but I'm not sure at all about this. I just know that I have nothing going into the power outlet now.

The Compaq monitor looks like the one on this page:

I don't want to replace the broken monitor.

    Thanks,
    Jean

Does your friends computer have any audio outputs on the rear of the case? If so the simplest solution is to invest in a pair of budget speakers and plug them in there.

Before giving up on the broken monitor and buying even an inexpensive set of speakers, check around. A lot of monitor repair shops have flat fees for fixing tube displays, based on size. It may cost as little as $50 to fix the old one, as long as it's not the tube itself broken.

A half-decent set of speakers with a small subwoofer will set you back $40. Of course, if sound isn't all that important, you can find speakers for less.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your comments. I took my friend's monitor home and plug it in to my computer and all of a sudden it worked. I don't know how long this will last but for now it is again hooked up to her computer, running well except that one of the speakers do not work. She can live with that as it is saving her hundreds of dollars.

We never did figure out why her monitor stopped working in the first place.

    Thanks for the help.

    Jean
