Running IE 6.0 with latest patches on Windows 2K Pro.

When I click on a webpage link to download a file, I don't get the option to specify where I want to save a file. It automatically begins downloading it to the default temporary file location.

Additionally, after it downloads it to the temporary location, I get an error message that says:

"Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied "

On another machine, with the same IE settings, I do have the option to specify where the file is saved.

    Thanks for any ideas.

Is this ALL files? Or just files with a certain extension such as ZIP, EXE, TXT, PDF, etc

Download a file, then click to download the same file again, when the pop up to overwrite the file appears , tell it no and specify the location you want the download to go. This "SHOULD " set your future downloads to the specified location.

from a very old thread - please back up your registry and do a system restore point before attempting this.

Re-Setting Internet Explorer to 'Save' rather than 'Open' Files Downloaded
    Added 7/16/96

When you try and download a .EXE file with Internet Explorer, you are prompted to "Always ask before opening this type of file ".
If you uncheck this box, the next time a EXE file is about to be downloaded, you will not be prompted and the file will automatically be opened.
You also do not see the "Always ask..." box again so you can uncheck it.
To reset Internet Explorer back again:

    Start Regedit
    Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile
    Change the EditFlags value from 38 07 01 00 to 38 07 00 00

    Thanks for the responses.

I was getting ready to write you guys a note tactfully explaining that you didn't understand my explanation of the problem :). However, I gave it the benefit of the doubt, and tried the Window's explorer Tools>>Folder Options>>File Types>> Advanced>> "Confirm Open after download "

Editing this for ZIP files now allows me the option to choose the location where the files are downloaded.

I still don't know why, when it automatically downloaded it to the temporary internet files location specified in Internet Explorer, it would not allow access.

However, this has taken care of the problem for now, so THANKS!
