    Epson 660 win 98

well printer stopped working (printing) was a few years old so after trying
all the obvious I bought a new printer with USB and parrallel ports
The PC only has the one USB and that was being used by camara( I know I can get a hub but...)well I proceeded to install on parrallel port and all went
ok except could not get printer to work and was not getting any errors
    about communication errors from pc.
so I decided to install on the usb port and it works ok
but has anyone else had simular? as if it works on the usb not sure why
the parrallel port is not working? I take it that the these ports use separate
    communication paths?

any thoughts would be greatly apprecited

    regards

    rodger.

In Control Panel>System>Device Manager click on the correct printer port and "Update Driver ", Windows will search for a latest driver and use it OR tell it to go to the drive with your printer software on it and load it.

If that doesn't work, "Remove" the device, restart, and Windows will load a new "hardware dbase" or settings.

Depending on the printer you have, plug the comm cable in either before or after Windows detection of new hardware.

Latest drivers downloaded from the printer manufacturer?

A USB hub is about $15

Possible you installed printer drivers for USB and not parallel port?

Epson printers are very picky as to how they are installed. I suggst you uninstall the printer drivers/software and reinstall the printer following Epson's instructions to the letter. If it's not Epson I suggst you still do this.

Could be a dodgy cable - try substituting another.

Not necessarily AFAIK - I run a USB printer - Epson 1270 and a parallel port printer HP Deskjet 520, both without problems and they will happily print simultaneously. That's on XP with USB 2 available on all USB ports.

ok pete thanks but what I would like to clarify is if there was an an issue
hardware orientated I.e if the parrallel port was somehow u/s then this would not effect the usb as the usb is via different channels as it were I hope that
I am making sense here as I would appreciate comments on this issue?

    Regards

In win XP the printer port LPT1 does not use an interrupt by default - the USB ports do so your assumption is correct - but I don't know your OS.

Suggestion - remove LPT1 in Device Manager, reboot to let Windows find it again.

Is the parallel port configured correctly? It may need to be set in the BIOS to something like EPP+ECC. It may only be set for standard.
