When I click on a text document. I get this window:

Program not found. Windows cannot find NOTEPAD.EXE. This program is needed for opening files of type 'Text Document'. Type in the executable file to be used instead.

Don't know what to type in or how to get notepad.exe working again.

Also, on my desktop I have an icon titled 'Incenerator' which is left over from a program called Perfect Companion. When I click on it, it does not show delete and clicking properties does nothing. Is the only way to delete it in safe mode. If so, how do you do that? Cant find anything in help.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Problems with Notepad are likely caused by one of the several viruses going around that attack, among other things, "notepad.exe." Make sure hidden files are showing (My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders, click OK) then do a search of the harddrive for a file named "notpad.exe." If it's there, the virus scenario become more than just likely.

If you don't have an up-to-date anti-virus program installed to do a full system scan, there are free online scans at Housecall and Panda.

Once you're sure the computer is clean of virus infections, do a search of the harddrive for "notepad.com." If found, rename it to "notepad.exe" and see if Notepad will then open.

    Search results:

    (Icon) Notepad C:\Windows
    (file) notepad.exe.bak C:\Windows
    " " " " " " \:System32

I did a complete system scan with my Norton Anti-Virus 2004 and it came up with 1 Winlink-Adware which it could not delete but quarantined.

I then did a scan with Adaware and it came up with nothing.

A search for notepad.com came up with nothing.

I recently was infected with 2 'about:blank' hijackers and my system is completely clean of them.

    Thanks Daizy.

I unzipped it to: C:Windows\System32\dllcache and it works like a charm. All text documents open for me now.

I don't understand where to put this file. And do I drag and drop it or what?

    You'll want Notepad.exe in C:Windows\System32
Copy and paste the contents of the zip into it.

    Glad you got it working!

Try Safe Mode first. Boot up hitting the F8 key and delete, than reboot normally.

If the file still won't delete - Use Move On Boot, download from here: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/moveonboot.html to delete it. It will add a new item to your right click Context Menu, target that file with Move on Boot, and then reboot.

    Regards - Charles
