Netscape will not recognise the info from the old HD as copied and pasted into program files as it was originally. With Netscape 7.1 reinstalled over top on a new HD running windows 98 as before.
Is there a solution for netscape to see the old messages?
    Thanks for your help

    Welcome to the Forum, infortec!

    Hi infortec,

What data did you copy and paste to the new HD's Program Files? Your Netscape 7.1 Profile data is found here:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

When copying Mail files, did you copy the entire Mail folder, or individual files, and are you using the same Profile name?

I'm also wondering why you installed Netscape 7.1 on top of the existing 7.1 Program?

Give us as much information as you can, as it makes it easier to help you troubleshoot your problem.

    Hi Ramona
Thanks for trying to help. The problem started when his old HD went down and the only way we could get any info from the drive was to hook it up to a USB device. At least that was the only option that worked at the time. We were able to see the files on the drive so we quickly copied his “My document folder†and the netscape folders with the hope of recovering all the mails and address book. We installed a new HD with Win98se as before and copied and pasted the entire contents of netscape folder back to C:\program files\nescape and the entire mozilla folder back to applications data. We hoped that reinstalling netscape 7.1 will see the folder contents and recognize it as well. We used the same profile name in mozilla as well but that did not madea difference. After that we just couldn’t see things clearly anymore and decided to seek help instead of making matters worse. Things did got worse when we tested netscape to download new mails, which it did and then we were in a “loop†after that.
No matter what we did after that didn’t seem to work so now I will look for the *.slt file(s) and follow your instructions.
Looking forward to your responses again

    Hi infortec,

This is where you went wrong. You must install Netscape again, and not copy files to the Netscape Program Files folder.

    This is what I recommend:
    Uninstall Netscape

    Delete:
The Netscape Programs folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape

    The mozilla.org folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org

Copy the Profiles folder to a temporary location. It is located here:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

    REBOOT YOUR PC

Now install Netscape, and follow these guidelines:

    The following steps are important:
Don't let Netscape launch once it is installed, and don't create a new profile. Close any window that opens at this point. This is so no Profiles Folder is created. You will copy the entire Profiles folder from your backup.

    Next:
Copy the backup of the Profiles Folder and paste it into the Mozilla folder of the new install
    (C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla)

That should get Netscape up and running.

To prevent having the Profile Manager open each time you open Netscape, right click on the Desktop Shortcut.
    Select: Properties
    Select: Shortcut
In the "Target" field add this command line switch: -p yourprofilename
It will look similar to this, and note there is one trailing space after the final quotation mark:

    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -p yourprofilename -quiet

The -quiet disables the splash screen, of course, this is your choice
