Should I be denied access to System Volume Information in Windows XP home?

My computer guy says that I should have full admin in the account I am using.

 

And DO you have full administration rights on the account you are using?

Depending on what you're trying to do....
If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights

I tried to log in to safemode but it was like my keyboard didn't work. My lights were lit up but I would type in my password and it wouldn't do anything. I couldn't even log into my user account in safemode.

 

Can you tell us what it is exactly that you're trying to do?

 

I have had problems with someone in my computer in the past, and them restricting me from doing some things.

I am trying to see if any of that is happening now.

When I got this computer back about a week ago from the shop, the guy said that I had full admin with my regular user.

I am just trying to find out if this is normal. It sounds like it is unless I go into safe mode as the admin, but I cannot get into safe mode.

I will try to get into safe mode a few more times.

 

If you are trying to delete a file in there.
Disable and Enable System Restore XP. Everything in there will be deleted, and you will have a new restore point created.

 

If you are using NTFS you will have to go to the system volume properties and add yourself(administrator account) because only the System has rights. I guess Fat32 doesn't have that problem. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q309531

 

If you use XP Home, you cannot log into the Admin account unless you are in Safe Mode or use TweakUI to add the option to your Welcome Screen. In XP Pro, you can tap C-A-D twice on the Welcome Screen and log in. The REAL Admin account on XP is superflous, because the main user has all admin priveleges and rights, and if, for some odd reason that account doesn't, you simply take ownership.

You can look up how to log in on your computer in safe mode. F8 is usual, but mine is F5, and I know some that use F2.

What I hear you saying is that someone has physical access to your computer, and you are suspicious that they might be monkeying with it somehow? If you can describe what you suspect they are doing, we can tell you how to check, and what to do about it. XP Pro has great encryption tools, but it sounds like you just need to lock down your computer for your privacy while you are away. We can tell you how to do that in XP Home, too.

I do not see the System Volume Information in Pro, either, and all my "hidden" files are displayed. There is nothing in there that would arlert you to changes made, anyway. Is there another user on that computer? You can define their access from your regular user account.

Right now I shouldn't have any problems with someone being in my computer. I just got it back from the shop. I was trying to see what was normal so I could tell if someone had gotten in.

But I cannot get into my admin account in safe mode. I set the password and I put a hint for me to remember what it was. The password I try doesn't work. I used the hint 1st and year which makes it my sons initials and his birth year. I know that now that I cannot get into that, if I want back into it I have to either take it to my repair guy again or reinstall.

But other things that concern me is that I enabled file protection because it was turned off. Now everytime I start my computer it asks for my windows cd. I put it in and it tells me that it needs the windows xp pro disk. I don't have a pro disk because I have the home edition. So I click try again and it does go through and do whatever it needs to do. If I try to just not do the file protection by xing out it keeps going from file to file with a pop up am I sure I want to skip this file, so since it seems like it will take forever I just plop the disk in and let it go. This happens everytime I restart.


With taking ownership I would have to be in my admin account in safemode right?
