What is the cause of this problem on a sony Vaio digital studio model PCV 7732.
refurbished, about 3 years old, running XP home. After it boots to XP,the power shuts off completely. If it is the power supply, why does it still boot but then shut off. These parts are all proprietary correct?
This is a problem,as I live on an islolated location, where can I get parts and support

Try to boot to safe mode, or if that's not possible, to a command prompt and see if it stays oprational. F8 should give you the menu. That would rule in or out a hardware problem, I think.

If it does seem to be hardware, first thing I'd think of is heat causing the shutdown.

Take off the case and make sure all the dust is removed (canned air is safest). Then run with a normal fan blowing on the inards and see if it runs.

If it still shuts down on you then you may have a power supply fan burned out.
