i get this message when i log into winxp:

"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator. "

then i get logged in with a temp profile.

does anyone know where the profiles are stored? or how i can fix this.

i can still get to all my files, except for my email in outlook, because i can't log in with my profile. please help!

oh i logged in as administrator. it doesn't change a thing. i'm the only one who uses this computer. there's the admin account, and my account. i have made some progress by poking around though. i think my ntuser.dat file is getting corrupted somehow. i have figured out how to back up everything except window settings, even after the profile has become corrupt. then i delete the profile and remake it. the only bad thing as that you have to redo all your folder and taskbar settings. i just want to know how my profile gets corrupted. i haven't had to hit the reset switch, or locked up since the last time i formatted. windows has shut down normally all the time. i'm stumped

I'm sure youve check for viruses, but just in case I thought I might mention it.
Could you have downloaded some bad shareware recently.
Also it maybe easier to reload you'r registry.
How long was this been going on? Just start, or sence install?

it had happened in the past. i had some driver issues and every once in a while my system would lock up in the middle of a game. the only thing to do was either shutdown with the power button or reboot key. i could not even hit ctrl-allt-del. from what i understand, windows was not able to save my settings in those instances and the profile became corrupt. i used windows 2000 pro for the last few weeks, but i have not had any lockups since i have reloaded windows xp. i thought of a solution this weekend, but i can't try it out until i get back to my computer at school. i have already figured out how to save almost everything and move it to a different account, but that's kind of a pain. i will post the solution if it works.
