All links open in new windows

OK I just upgraded to Firefox 0.9 and had to wrangle with it to get it see my bookmarks (long story). Now that that's out of the way, I have a little problem nettling me:

When I had my old Firefox, I could click on a link in say MSNM or MailWasher and it'd open the link in the Firefox window that was already open. Now when I do it, it opens a new browser window. Is there any way I can get these programs to use the browser window that's already open?

    Thanks!

    Hi shadowhawk,

When looking on the Firefox Tip & Tricks site, it says:

Open external links in new windows or tabs

If another program wants to display a web page in the default browser, Firefox will reuse an existing window by default, which means that it will navigate from a page you might be reading.

In the Advanced JavaScript options disable all the options in that window, and see if that makes a difference. It may not, but worth a try.

I'll look around and see if other users are having this problem.

That didn't work. It still opened a new window when I clicked on the link in my email program. Also when I click on a link in MailWasher, I get an error saying, "Couldn't point the Web browser at the link (2). "

I only want it to use the browser window that I already have open. I don't want a new window to open. It was this way in 0.8. I'm assuming this is a beta bug with 0.9.

    Shadowhawk,

Look at this Registry Key, and see if it points to Firefox:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\http\shell\
    open\command

    It does point to Firefox.
The links always open in Firefox, but they open in a new instance instead of the instance that's already running.

    Hi Shadowhawk,

Yes, I understand your problem, and I'm sure it's frustrating. I'm looking through some of the Bug Reports to see what I can find...

    shadowhawk,

Clear the Location Bar, and type in: about:config
In the Filter field, type in: advanced.system.supportDDEExec
Check to see if the Value is "true ". It should be...

I have this: advanced.system.supportDDEExec default boolean true

    Is this right?

    shadowhawk,

Yes, that's correct. Had it been False, that would have been the problem...

Mozilla Firebird Forums were down for a while, but open now, so will do some searches there, and see what I can come up with.

    shadowhawk,

You are not the only person having this problem. There is a discussion here, which might interest you. A Registry fix is mentioned, but no indication of where it can be found...
