Just got new computer with windows xp and installed 7.1 for first time. At the very end it got stuck on installing Sun Java 2 for twenty minutes so I just rebooted.

So what problems will this cause?? Should I uninstall and try again, maybe without Sun Java 2??

    Thanks. Carol

The answer kind of confuses me here. Is it a double whammy or should install be done double or one times? Do you install the Java plugin 2 times or just once and how many times and where many folders should Java be copied to.
    Thanks for help.

    Paris,

Disregard the double paragraphs, and skewed text. There is a problem with the new BBS software, which prevents me from replying. I'm going to delete that post for fear someone will mess up their browser. I left it up for my Admin. to see. I apologize for the inconvenience...

Yes, I would uninstall Netscape 7.1 through Add/Remove
Close all programs running in the background, including your AV and Firewall

Once Netscape is uninstalled, reboot your PC

There will be some files/folders to delete before reinstalling Netscape. This is assuming that you have only one Netscape install, and NO Mozilla install. If you do have Mozilla or another Netscape version installed please post back with that information before doing anything.

Delete the mozilla.org folder, located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org
    AND
Delete the Netscape folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape

Install Netscape 7.1 again, and do a "Custom" install in order to deselect the Sun Java 2 component.

Next: download the Sun Java Plugin, Version 1.4.2.
    Download 1.4.2

Install the plugin, and it should find the Netscape plugins folder, and add these files to your plugins folder:
    NPJava11.dll
    NPJava12.dll
    NPJava13.dll
    NPJava14.dll
    NPJava32.dll
    NPJPI142.dll
    NPOJI610.dll

If not, then you can copy the above files from the Java bin folder located here: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\bin

Let me know if you have further questions.

    Ramona

I got my new computer, and I found out that it came with v.1.3.1, so the problem could occur if the the Netscape installation includes a newer Java version. I have had a problem of hanging ever since. 1.4.1, and later, came out.
This hang occurs if one selects "Netscape 6" to use it. Later JREs had a choice of "Mozilla1.1 ", and the problems started with Mozilla. I just gave up selecting the browser, and the applets have always come up fine.

    Hi Carol,

Netscape 7.1 bundles Sun Java 2 v1.4.0_02, which is really quite old. I suggested 1.4.2, as it seems to be the Version which is comatible with most OS', however if you wish to try a newer version, that's fine too. You can upgrade to 1.4.2_04 HERE

    Hi Carol,

The SDK is the Sun Development Kit, so you want the JRE Version.
