Word 2000 stoped working

I have been running Word for about 3 years, now when I try to run it (though the desk top icon) the machine hangs up, when I hit ctr,alt, delete it tells me this system is dangerously low on resorces.

I tried to reinstall word and got 2 error messages:

cannot launch c:\windows\system\msiexec.exe

and

A Device attached to the system is not functioning.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks for the info, I was able to restart Word 2000 by deleting the normal.dot file.
