    Hi,
Can anyone please tell me where I can get info on what the proper security settings for Windows Xp are. I am looking for the proper settings for the "trusted site" - "restricted site" - "local intranet" and "Internet "... Any assistance will be greatly appreciated...

This is a good quick-list although it ignores the intranet/local network settings.

Couple of downloads linked Here that might be of interest. Windows XP Security Guide - Securing Windows XP Clients and Threats and Countermeasures: Security Settings in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP
plus one dedicated to 2003 server security issues.

    Hi,
Thank you. I think I have seen that before but for some reason I could not find it again. Never fails. Anyways, what happened was a friend computer has Comcast on their Windows Xp and at the top of their Comcast screen they do not get the video part. By accident when I was fiddling with my security settings, mine changed from having to not having it, then I changed it back. But when I tried setting their settings to the same as mine (I have Windows/Me) their Comcast screen now will not display. So after a few Ooops and so on, I figured it's best to see if there was something available saying what they are suppose to be. Thanks again, I will give it a try this evening...

    Hi,
Just wanted to update...I was able to use the settings off of another Windows Xp, along with info I managed to stumble across from Microsoft. I did not realize the connection of the security level, and what the exact meaning was of prompt, disable and enable was all about. I now have a good understanding of the Internet-Trusted Sites-Intranet-and Restricted as well. Too understand them all, one must get atleast a basic understanding of it before changing...Thanks again...

Master Green--You will find that several sites will not work unless ActiveX controls are permitted to run. One of the more important is Windows Update. If you have "Run ActiveX controls and Plugins" Disabled for Internet sites, the simplest way to run sites like Windows Update is to put them into Trusted Sites, where by Default, ActiveX controls are permitted. This of course assumes you do trust the site, which probably is a good assumption for Windows Update. By the way, uncheck the box "Require Server verification at the bottom of the Trusted Sites window|Apply|OK.
NOTE--The above issue is different from the messages you often get that a page will not display correctly unless ActiveX controls are permitted--YES/NO. Most of the time you can just click NO and the page will display just fine to my eyes anyway.
(Pages using Shockwave and Flash Player will, however, not display unless running ActiveX is permitted.)

    Hi,
Thank you for that bit of info...I have learned alot in the last couple of days on computer security settings and how one change or so can change something else...When I work on a computer I always write down what I see first before making any changes, and that has helped on several occassions. Once again, all info is always appreciated...Thanks
