Is it possible that you did not do an upgrade or repair install, and instead, formatted your programs away? Can you access them through Start> All Programs( those would be shortcuts) or Windows Explorer? Is your data intact?

    Hello kengster,

If Johanna's surmise is not the problem:
then do a Restore with System restore back to the initial restore point that the system created on day 1 and go from there.

Under all programs > Accessories > system tools. Make sure the "restore to earlier date" button is ticked > next and Once the panel w/calendar comes up, click on the the appropriate day.

If it is the problem: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=10864&highlight=Lost+Favorites (hi daizy :)

You should still go back to that 1st restore point because of the error you get.

    Regards - Charles

When did you purchase this copy of XP? If within at least a year, probably longer, SP1 should be incorporated within XP.

Scroll down the page to Add/Remove and see if you find anything useful in Kellys-Korner.

Locate a file on your PC named Sysoc.inf (it may be hidden so you will need to set your system to show hidden files).

Open it with notepad (it is a text file so will open fine), copy the contents, and paste it here. Then close notepad without making any changes to the file.

I had this same problem after a reformat. Nothing showing in the add/remove window. Turns out that my Omega zip drive got named C: and my hard drive got named E: and since the add/remove looks on the C: drive only for installed programs it couldn't find anything because no disk was in there. The only thing I could do, after much research, was to to do another reformat but this time with the IDE cable unplugged from my Omega zip drive. Afterwards all programs shoed in the add/remove window and I then plugged the IDE cable back into my zip drive and it was then named E:. Don't know if you got a zip drive but thought I post about my experience just in case.

Well, it was not what I had suspected although you do have quite a few items that will not show in add/remove because of the settings in your sysoc.inf.

Any line that contains the word hide will not show unless you edit the file and remove the word (while being careful to leave the commas that are on both sides.

For instance, in your games section.
Pinball and Wordpad will not show up to be removed from there while igames will.

If you wanted to see the others, an edit so they read
    should make them display there.

Since you aren't seeing any, there is some other cause and apparently not a common issue. Hopefully what Kanno posted will be of some help to you. If not, it may well be to someone else looking at this thread.

I haven't given up looking for a possible cause and cure. Just nothing found to now.

It may be early next week though since I asked for help but to business email addresses and may not get any response during the weekend. Don't know.

Just one more thing. Your HDD is named C: isn't it? If it is then I'm at a lose on what to do.

If Kengster deletes the Hosts file, won't Windows rebuild it? What are the chances of it correcting itself?

Would an SFC repair the Add/Remove? They are system files, I assume. Thinking out loud...

Hosts is not a windows protected file. Delete it and it is gone.

start~run~sfc /scannow might correct the problem. Certainly couldn't hurt to try it. Thanks for that reminder and no idea why I didn't think of it myself. Ah well, that's why it is great to have lots of folks looking at these threads. :D

As mentioned previously, the utility that gets called when opening the Add/Remove Programs dialog is the file %windir%\system32\appwiz.cpl. If you have re-registered this file and there was no change, and you've followed the other suggestions in this thread, we will likely need to start checking the dependencies of that file. Try running the following command:

    expand %XPCD%\i386\xpsp1res.dl_ %windir%\system32\xpsp1res.dll

where %XPCD% is the value of your CD-ROM with the XP SP1 CD inserted ( ie. E: )

If that doesn't work, you can try downloading the Dependency Walker utility from www.dependencywalker.com and verifying that all of the files listed as required by appwiz.cpl exist on your hard disk.

Running the System File Checker utility (SFC) should insure that all of these files are correctly updates, so hopefully you won't have to resort to manually replacing/restoring the files, but that is an option. Also, you may want to verify that the Application log in the Event Viewer (Start | Run | eventvwr.msc) doesn't have any messages that indicate what the problem is.

    HTH,

    ...TonyMu
