Hey, I am currently having problems with widnows update. I have just reformatted and I need to get updates for Windows, except whenever I click the "Review and Install Updates" or any link on the menu, it loads very slowly and then says Page Cannot be displayed. Also, I had Service Pack 1 install file on my backup hard drive. When the file is about to install, it tries to connect to the internet and it says It cannot Connect. If anyone can solve my problem, it would be very helpful.

Thank you for your time and patience.

    How large is that file?
The full file version of SP1 should be some 130 MB and SP1a some 120 MB.

If conciderably smaller, You only have a "starter" file which determines what Your computer needs and then tries to connect to go get it.

    For Windows Updates:

    Windows Update Catalog

Search for updates for Windows XP RTM in Your language. Scroll down towards the bottom to find SP1.

This is actually SP1a without Microsoft Virtual Machine. It requires a separate download of Java from Sun Microsystems

    Christer

Edited: After installing SP1a, You no longer seach for updates for Windows XP RTM but for Windows XP SP1. However, I guess that You would figure that out on Your own.

Did You download SP1a to the HDD and execute it from there?

For XP, I have all Critical Updates, in addition to SP1/SP1a downloaded to the HDD and burned on CDs.
I have used the CDs on many occasions to help friends on dialup and it has worked every time.

How are you connecting to the internet, and can you get to MS sites? Can you download from other sites?

If you have done a repair, not a reinstall, you may already have some of the updates you are trying to get. You can use Belarc to see exactly what you do have.

I'm as  as Christer with your description of the problem, so if you can give us some more detail, we might be able to help.

Alright, i reformatted only my first hard drive and I downloaded Windows SP1 full, not the express because it wouldn't be able to connect to the internet. Then i try to connect to windows update and then it stops responding and I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del so it can respond. After, it says "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.

Select from any of the following pages for information about Windows Update services, or send us your feedback.

    Windows Update Home Page
    About Windows Update
    Support Information

You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows Update.

Send error number to Microsoft (0x800A138F)
Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident; you may or may not receive a response. "

I tried to fixe that problem with that error number, it says to remove some file, I forgot the name and it it was already not selected.

You have XP, right? Home or Pro? When you press C-A-D you are getting the task manager, correct? What are you doing, in task manager, to make the computer respond again? And are you trying to download on another system? Does your XP installation have internet access, or not?
