I just went into my msconfig and saw a long list of programs that have checkmarks beside them... I was wondering if it's safe to disable some? Also, there are a couple that are duplicated (ie. NProtect 11 and 18) and some have quotes around the file name - why is that? Here's my list:

    1. ScanRegistry
    c:\windows\scanregw.exe\autorun

    2. TaskMonitor
    c:\windows\taskmon.exe

    3. SystemTray
    systray.exe

    4. LoadPowerProfile
    Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

    5. CriticalUpdate
    c:\windows\system\wucrtupd.exe -startup

    6. LVComs
    c:\windows\system\LVComS.exe

    7. StillImageMonitor
    c:\windows\system\stimon.exe

    8. ccApp
    "c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\ccApp.exe "

    9. ccRegVfy
    "c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\ccRegVfy.exe"

    10. AdvancedToolsCheck
    c:\progra~1\norton~1\advtools\advchk.exe

    11. NProtect
    c:\progra~1\norton~1\advtools\nprotect.exe

    12. LoadQM
    loadqm.exe

    13. DXM6Patch-981116
    c:\windows\p_981116.exe\Q:A

    14. HPDJTaskbarUtility
    c:\windows\system\hpztsb05.exe

    15. LoadPowerProfile
    Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

    16. SchedulingAgent
    mstask.exe

    17. ccEvtMgr
    "c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\ccEvtMgr.exe "

    18. NProtect
    c:\progra~1\norton~1\advtools\nprotect.exe

    19. ScriptBlocking
    c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\scriptblocking\sbserv.exe" -reg

    20. EncoderAgent
    c:\progra~1\window~3\encoder\wmencagt.exe

    21. MicrosoftOfficeStartup
    c:\progra~1\micros~1\office\osa9.exe

This seems like too much, considering I was told by my ISP tech guy that there should be nothing in there!

Your ISP tech guy is wrong. Some of the things you have in the list aren't required but it all depends on what you want to have running on startup.

Go to this page, type in the name of each item on the list (ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor, etc.) one at a time in the site's search box, click the Search button. Once you know what each does, you can decide if you want to uncheck it.

Thank you VERY much Miz, that page was extremely helpful. I'm still not sure about one: loadqm.exe

    The page said
"Installed with MSN Explorer and loads the MSN Queue Manager. Required to enable the WU AutoUpdate feature. Note that disabling this can sometimes prevent internet sharing working on Win2K Pro SP2. Reports also suggest that removing it will re-enable internet access - hence the "users choice" recommendation. If you have problems leave it, otherwise I recommend you disable it. "

Would you suggest I keep it or remove it?

I agree with Miz. He is outright wrong.

    #1 Needed
    #3 Needed
    #8 Needed ( Anti Virus I believe )
    #9 same
    #17 same I believe

#11 & 18 are Norton Protection for the Recyle Bin ( has been known to cause problems ) I think it should only be in once anyway. I gotta let someone that uses Norton answer that. It has been so long since I used it that I just plain forgot.

But a Friendly Warning. If you do shut it down MAKE SURE it is emptied first.

I have no idea what # 13 is.

#15 is only needed if you use Power managment from the Control Panel.

#16 only works half of the time or when it feels like it anyway.

    No Idea on #20.

#21 is most certainly a BIG DRAG on the System.

All of the rest are at your discretion as to whether they load or not.

As far as shutting downl "loadqm," I have it disabled in startup and haven't experienced any problems with either the computer, home network or internet connection (DSL shared through a router).

Since I don't use automatic update or MSN Explorer, I have no advice about loadqm's effect on either one.

As far as loadqm goes I have no idea what it even is. I do not even recall seing it.

Unless, it was one of the many files that I just said "I do not need " and dumped it.

As far as Startup things go I use ( and have been for years ) a program call Startup Cop. You can use it to disbale things and if they are found to be not needed then just remove them

It also worksquite well in XP. Not to the same extent but pretty well.

OK I need to get something cleared up here.

Is MSN Explorer something different than Internet Explorer ( such as IE6 ) ?

The letters MSN tell me that it is.

Yes! Very different!! I've only used it a few times and don't particularly care for it.

Yea BillyBob- i installed MSN8 off of CD a few months ago onto an IE5.5 machine; my web cruising turned flaky, resources went down, it took loads of disk space for functions i didn't use, and didn't play well with other installs/utilities. It took awhile to clean up after it too, I'm sticking with the no-frills IE. But that's just my opinion, it must work Ok for others.

    Thanks for the info folks.

I was somewhere on the web the other day and if I had not SEEN it and said NO, I would have had MSN8 on this machine.

Does this MSN Explorer have anything to do with MSN instant messenger..In other words, if I remove the LoadQM, will I still have access to my MSN instant Messenger?

Thanks....I'm not the sharpest tool in the computer shed, so any help is much appreciated..

LoadQM comes with MSN Messenger too. You can disable it however with no ill effects on Messenger. Mines been off since the day I downloaded it (3-4 months ago). I haven't missed it yet. ;)

Load power profile, task monitor, scan registry, and system tray are all that are needed for windows 98.

Go to www.mlin.net and get a pair of utilities: Startup Control and Startup Monitor.

Startup Control is easier to use than MSConfig. Startup Control will install to your control panel, but put a shortcut on the desktop. It's easier to access. It will not list "dangerous" things.

Startup Monitor will tell you when stuff is trying to sneak in the startup. A lot of programs will try to put themselves in the line up if you use them!

After trimming the entries you may find that you don't need #3 either - I haven't used it for over two years. See MSKB 128129.
