Recently lost a lot of data on a Hitachi 30GB 2.5" HD. Do not know if this was software issue or a hardware issue.

I am reformatting and reinstalling XPP OS.

What I am requesting is a recommendation for a free software diagnostic utility to check to see if the HD is okay or not.

    Hiya, Daizy! Long time! :p

I tried Hitachi's utility and came out flying colors, so must've been a software issue. I booted into the Advanced Drive Fitness test and all sectors came back A-OK, but I wiped the Master Boot Record as well as the rest of the disk anyway to shore things up nice'n tidy. :)

    Thanks!
