I'm currently using dialup with AT&T. Have been for many years now. AT&T now offers DSl for a reasonable price so I'm giving it some serious consideration. I don't spend a lot of time on the 'net, but the speeds they quote look pretty good. Comcast is available as well, but my observation, locally, is that they ain't all that doggone fast -- 100kbs average!? AT&T claims they can better that.

My dilemma is: At present on dial-up I shut down everything -- none of this "on line all the time" jazz for me. Can I do the same with DSL? In other words, shut completely down at the end of the day without creating any problems?

You can certainly shut down your DSL connection whenever you want without causing any problems at all.

Since I'm a mile and a half from the switching station, it takes several minutes for my DSL modem to sync up. My computers boot up a lot fast than the modem can sync, so I never power down the modem or the router, I just power off all the computers at night. (I live in a tiny town and the power goes off frequently. I hate being waked up by the unbelievably loud beeping of the UPS)

As you can see, you can turn off all or just some of the toys without problems.

    true.

but we do have power outages from time to time, that's why i unplug 'em.

dsl uses phone lines, do you have a lot of static on the phone?

1 1/2 miles should be well within the max distance from the station and should come up right away.

does your phone work ok, any delays or echos, could be a problem with the modem or the rj45 cables from the modem to the computer/router.

do you provide the modem or does your isp, if the isp, try another one or if you know someone else on the system, try their modem and see if there's any difference. ;)
