Error loading NvCpl.dll

I am getting an error dialog box after logging on XP Pro.

"Error loading C:\Winnt\System32\NvCpl.dll
A dynamic link library (dll) initialization routine failed. "

The file appears to be okay. Is there a way to reload without losing all my patches or updates?

 

I recently had a problem like this, i think... Can you load into windows at all, or does it come up right before the login screen, and force you to restart? Does safe mode work?

If it does restart into the same screen without a login screen, and safe mode does not work... Then you might have to clean install XP again, or use a recovery disk (if you got the computer from like dell or something)

Thanks to both for the suggestions. I'll give them a try.

FYI. Everything seems to work fine except for a problem that I have with McAfee Internet Security Suite 6.0. I'm told that both my Firewall and My Privacy are not being loaded, but the Main Menu indicates that they are "protecting."

Since I've had continuing problems with this MAfee item, I didn't tie the two problems together and don't know if I should.

A "Safe" reinstall! What / how is that accomplished. I used to reinstall right over 95 and 98, but wasn't sure it that can be done with XP Pro.

 

For the video drivers, go to device manager and look under display adapters for your video card. Right click and remove. You will get a warning, say OK, close it out and reboot. Upon restarting the new hardware wizard will find it and reinstall the drivers.

Safe reinstall of the firewall means with no internet connection, uninstall it through add/remove or it's uninstaller on the start menu, then reinstall. Establish a connection and immediately check for updates.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I was reffering to absentmindedJWC's comment about a safe reinstall of the system - XP Pro.

Reinstalling Windows would be a little extreme, the error message you are getting refers to a nVidia video driver. So reinstalling your video driver (or reinstalling the most current driver) should correct the problem. If you are just curious as to the steps for a clean install see... HERE.
