Okay, here goes. I am trying to install a 128MB key memory USB device from Dell on two (2) Win98SE PC (Dell). I got it installed on one PC but can't seem to get it on this one.

On the first PC I just did an Add/Hardware and pointed at the driver. NO problem.

Second PC: Had to disable a CDRom drive to free up the e: drive.
Unplugged the CDRom and now have c: d: and network drives f thru m.
The flash drive appears to install but never shows up in explorer. I have tried letting Windows find it and install and I have also done Add/Remove hardware. Same type of computer as the first one but this one did have the extra drive.

    Ideas?

I'm not an expert here, but on my 98SE Dell laptops I think the OS doesn't have USB drivers. I have to put the installation CD in first, before plugging in the device. Is that what you did? Install drivers before unplugging the CDRom?

    USB JumpDrive Problem

I just bought a USB JumpDrive and it works great on my Compaq laptop but isn't recognized by my Dell. First time I plugged it into the Presario it was recognised immediately. The Dell doesn't even know it's there. The JumpDrive people say it doesn't need drivers on XP, just on 98. It sure is handy since the new laptops aren't coming out with floppy drives.

Another thing about this Dell, when I burn a CD it can't be read on another PC..? Of course it's almost impossible to get Dell to reply to inquiries.

On my 98se i just let it install and it choose the T: drive (first available).
Maybe if you just leave the CD-ROM installed.

Hi, CPO. Don't know whether you have solved your problem, but if not, here's my experience of installing a Flash Drive. May help.
I had a similar problem; just could not install the drivers on my PC (Win. 98SE). Eventually this is what I did. Put the installation disk in the rom drive and opened it. On my disk, which might differ from yours, there is a 'setup' icon. I clicked on this to install the iFormat facility, and bingo! it put the drivers in.
    Hope you find this useful.

Thanks for the info. I finally solved my problem by buying a USB hub plugin. Seems this turned my laptop USB ports into fast access and the Jump Drive now works fine. However, I will try your suggestion ... The Jump Drive is certainly the answer to many problems whther you have a floppy drive or not. One major advantage is it holds so much more data than a floppy and you can carry it in your pocket.
