    Occassionally, when I've been to one web site and then *back-up*, click on Favorites to access a Q&A board, the *Favorites* menu disappears. So, I thought I'd try chkdsk /r to see if that helped. Now , here's the problem;

    I set the BIOS to boot from the XP CD, started the system and a menu came up suggesting *r* for Recovery Conslole. That done, the next page of text came up;

    Microsoft XP(TM) Recovery Console
    The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.
    Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.
    1: C:\Windows
    Which Windows installation would you like to log onto
    (To cancel press ENTER)?

    When entering anything after C:\Window I get "invalid command (or entry) ".

    Where, and how, do I get the option to enter *chkdsk /r*?

    Hi Trident,
    You have to type the number as shown for 'C', ie 1.
    It is easier to run checkdisk from Windows.
    My Computer > Right click the drive you want to check, and select 'Properties'
    Choose the check mode you want. You will have to reboot if you want to have file errors corrected.
    If you want more options, run chkdsk from a command line.
    In fact, from the recovery console, you are unable to use any other switches than /P or /R.

    Alternatively ....

    Start > Run > type in cmd

    At the command prompt type in chkdsk C: /r or whichever drive you want to check > Enter

    Accept the message that chkdsk will run at the next reboot.

    As Roger notes other switches availible - see Help & Support 'Chkdsk' or here

    Thanks, Roger and Pete. As you, no doubt, can tell there are several "subtle" commands in XP with which I'm not fully acquainted.

    Pete, thanks for the chkdsk link.

    Trident - the recovery console is mostly a 'last resort' thing when you have a problem that absolutely can't be worked on with the main parts of the OS loaded - even safe mode.

    If you have choices that will work from either normal or safe mode, they are a better option for you.

    Hi Newt:...I believe the suggestions by Roger and Pete helped out. As I had posted originally, it was not a serious problem, but aggravating when it did occur. Thanks!
