    Hello,

I have a problem with my modem, or possibly some other piece of hardware between the phone plug and my modem.

    System Details:

Windows Me, Gateway PC (Essential Series), Intel 868 MHz,
AC-Link 56K modem (an internal winmodem), Brooking mo/bo.

    Scenario:

Had mother board replaced yesterday due to a completely unrelated problem. I haven't called the tech-support regarding this problem YET, just incase someone has a solution, besides, it will take about 2-3 weeks for a new mo/bo to be sent to me so I'm hoping theres someone out there...

The Problem (Started Yesterday, no new software or hardware except the mo/bo mentioned):

As soon as I plug the computer to the wall phone jack via an ordinary phone cable, the connection is "open" and I don't mean that the computer dials out and connects to the internet, I mean as soon as I plug the cable to the back of my computer, the line is open and hence the phone appears to be off the hook. This is without having had dialed out.

Now, if I plug it in and quickly start up a dial connection, then the modem will find a dial tone and dial out. It connects to my ISP fine and once connected I have few problems (apart from some intermittent disconnects due to a lousy ISP). But if I select "disconnect" it will disconnect me from the internet alright, but it won't hang-up. If I try to dial-up again straight away, I find that the line is beeping like it would if you kicked an ordinary phone of the hook and never dialed. The only way to get the dial tone back is to pull the cable out and then reinsert it.

So, I know I have some biiig problems because problem persists even if restarting the computer w/ or w/out cable still plugged in. (i.e., Restart > try to dialup => phone appears to be off the hook)

Have uninstalled/reinstalled modem/modem enumerator, have deleted / recreated dial up connection... no luck.

    My question is:

Can something within windows set the hardware not to hangup, even if the computer is restarted, (via some ambiguous modem instruction) or is my problem: bad modem (and hence bad mo/bo because its integrated!)

Sorry about the length. If there are any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. So annoying to have to plug-in and plug-out every time I want to use the internet or when I get disconnected

P.S. Yes I have tried different cables.

Try disabling Com2/Serial2 in your BIOS. You may have to install the modem again to Com2 in your O/S. HTH. :)

Thanks for the reply luqa, but I there are two reasons I cannot do what you suggest:

    1. I went through my BIOS from top to bottom and could not find anything on disabling COM ports, the only relevant option was

    'Onboard modem [enabled]'

    this is probably because...

    2. I have no serial ports on my PC, just USB's (x 5)

The modem is indeed 'connected' through COM3 (verified through the Control Panel > modem properites.

.... anything else you can think of?

This would suggest you have two modems, one on the Mother Board and the internal (PCI perhaps, based on your original post) modem. Disable the 'Onboard modem' in your BIOS. HTH :)

Sorry luqa, but I have used the wrong terminology to in my original post.

My internal winmodem is an onboard, integrated modem. I definitely don't have two modems. (no cards on any expansion slots).

In the end I just called my support crew and they deduced I need a whole new mo/bo, so they will send me yet another one.

Thanks for your suggestions anyway. Until then, I'll just have to keep on unplugging/replugging the phone cable to my computer.
