I usually do a Check Disk once every two weeks. Tried today and it's missing. There is no Check Disk in System Tools. I can find it on TOOLS from my hard drive but the error I get when the system reboots is: Cannot open the volume for direct access. Tried "chkdsk /r" and small window indicated it couldn't be found. Suggested that I go to Search and look for it.

I did a System File Check, tried it again, same result. I have not installed anything lately, except for the Windows Update maybe 10 days or 2 weeks ago. I've tried GoBack to the earliest date listed which was long ago, no help.

I can live without this but in case I do need it I'd like to have it working.

Need some guidance here if you will.

Download and install Agent Ransack if you don't already have it. Much better search tool than Windows Explorer.

Do a search for chkdsk and you should see copies in c:\windows\system32 and c:\windows\system32\dllcache if all is well.

If you find them, try opening a cmd window and rather than just chkdsk /r put in the full path so
    c:\windows\system32\chkdsk /r
    and see what happens.

It is possible that you are the second person this week who had the path on their XP system go all strange and the PC just doesn't know where to locate the file.

I have Agent Ransak (from an earlier post) and it didn't find it either. I went to Sys32 and looked, it's not there. Couldn't find the chkdsk /r at that folder either.

I have about all the Spyware Programs that are mentioned in BBS, ran them, ran CWShredder, but didn't run the HJT as it never occured to me that spyware might tbe the problem. If someone thanks so, I'll do it.

I suppose I could do a XP Repair, but if SFC won't work, that might not either. Hope I don't have to do a reformat as the PC is working great, better now that anytime in the past.

    Thanks for the reply.

Edit: This may cause you to wonder what I'm drinking tonight, but a biggie happened. I turn the PC off for the night and Grouch was using her networked PC and complained she wasn't through. I turn it back on waiting for a full bootup and a window came up indicating it was going to do a disk check withing 10 seconds.................! I hadn't checked it again, it just did it on it's own! Probably a delay from the previous time.

I looked for the files again, there are still not there. I don't have the icon in System Tools to select it. What a weird night. In about 20 minutes I'm going to shut down. Hope a disk check doesn't come up in the morning or evertime I start the PC. Something is still wrong as I can't do a check but it does it on it's own! Maybe in a day or two something bad will happen and I'll have to reformat. That should clear things up.

Before the original Post on this thread I searched for SCAN DISK and didn't find what I was looking for. Should I have searched for CHKDSK probably found it  .

I did see the Post about ZA 5 giving problems with CHKDSK and followed the suggestions. I removed ZA 5, went back to the previous edition, now the Scan Disk or DSKCHK works just fine. Still missing my Icon in the System Tools but maybe a shortcut will take care of that.

Yep. The scanning utility you want is chkdsk.exe in \system32.

Just one question, Mudd, do you call her "Grouch" to her face? :D

I've call her that for most of our married life, 46 years. Really she is a Grouch when things aren't just right for her. She accepts my naming her and in reality she is the finest there is. Wish the world could met her. She is an Ovarian Cancer suvivor from an earlier age and had no chance but did Survive!

Most of my friends refer to her As Grouch, fondly of course, and she accepts it as such. She used to take it "not so well" but it's acceptable now. What should she expect, she calls me Mudd! :D

That is neat, Mudd, 46 years of partnership, and the freedom to call each other names! :D Seriously, I'm glad she is a Survivor. We did the Relay for Life Walk this past weekend, and heard some incredible stories. It is amazing the grit people can come up with, when they are determined to LIVE! (If I were her, I'd outlive you just for spite! :) )

FWIW, in XP you don't need to do a Chkdsk every week, or even every month. On a stable system, you shouldn't need it at all. XP does all that on the fly.

Thank you for your kind words. Good to know about the interval for CHKDSK. Think I did this out of habit with Win 98.

Your Post are interesting. I always try to understand and make note of some.

Ohio is blessed to have you there!
