Hey people, I have just got a new wireless optical mouse and keyboard. After I had inserted the CD and installed it, I switched off the pc, plugged the new mouse and keyboard in, started it up again and... nothing. The cursor doesn't move and I can't type anything in the password field. It is XP compatible (which I have). Whilst I'm installing it says:

"The file 'i8042prt.sys' on Windows XP Home Edition
Servie Pack 1 CD is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click
    OK.

    Copy files from:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\i386 "

If I click ok, it will just keep making a silly 'ting' noise. so I click "cancel" and it finishes installation. Then says "reboot" etc. I do this but no to avail. Any help anyone?

    Thanks, Darryl

    Hi enrique86.

That file, i8042prt.sys, was never loaded so that is probably the problem. The location it specified was just the last location from the last time you loaded something. You need to find the file. It might be in Windows\system32. Check there and when it asks for it, change the pointer to windows\system32.

Also, and I do beg your most humble apologies for mentioning this, but, the mouse and keyboard have batteries. Be sure they are loaded. Sorry bout that.

Hey Giles, thanks for replying. Lol, yes, batteries are in both the keyboard and mouse. I had a look in Windows/System32 and there is no 'i8042prt.sys'. What should I do? Does this mean that I can't use the mouse and keyboard?

I have XP Pro with SP1 loaded and the file is in the following folders:

    \Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

    \Windows\System32\Drivers

If you don't have SP1 loaded the file may not be on your system but if you do then it should be in the above directories. If this is the cause and you can install again and point to one of the above it should cure the problem.

Although it's not in Windows/System32, it is in Windows\system32\drivers. Should i just copy it to Windows/System32? I have Windows XP Home with SP1

    Hi.

You can try that but it probably won't work. More than likely you'll have to go through the install procedure so Windows can set the registry entries properly after everything is installed in the proper sequence. When it asks for that file just point to where it is. Should work ok.

So what should I do exactly in the correct order? As you can probably tell, I'm not too good at this.Oh and, 'i8042prt' is in these locations:

    C:\WINDOWS\$NtServiePackUninstall$

    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ReinstallBackups\0000\DriverFiles\i386

The instruction at "0x771c76cb" referenced memory at "0x00169210 ". The memory could not be "read ".

Click on OK to terminate the Program.'

    Hi.

If you insert one of the paths where that file is located in
where it asks for it in your first post the install process should
get past that particular problem and proceed.

I'm unclear about the memory pointer problem. That doesn't
seem to be related but could be of course.

I sorted out the memory thing. It was something to do with a conflict between one of the windows updates. I just had to download a fix for it. That's ok now, but I still can't get the **** thing to work! Here's what I do:

Put the CD in, begin to install, it asks where 'i8042prt.sys' is, I find it, installation finishes, reboot. Plug the wires in, and... *surprise suprise(!)* it doesn't work.

In the instruction manual it says:

Plug leads in, switch on PC, install >> but how are you supposed to move the mouse if its not even installed yet? It says the keyboard wont work but nothing about the mouse? I don't know if you have one but it says that you have to "press the buttons under the reciever, mouse then keyboard for channel settings for three seconds" - you have to do this just before you install. You got any suggestions?

I think your answer may be in the instructions you quote .....

rather than install software and then plug in.

    Have you tried this route?

Hi PeteC. Do you mean Plug the leads in, switch on the PC then install? If so, yeah, i've tried that. Unfortunately nothing will work. How can the mouse move if it' not even installed the CD yet? Please help, this is really doing my head in. I've read that maybe you need to uninstall the other mouse (the one im using now) after you have installed the new one. Is this true? If it wasn't and I deleted it, what am i gonna do then if it didn't work, I wouldn't be able to installl the old one becasue it wouldn't work.

I'm not into wireless devices - just moved to a ball-less mouse, so I don't know what drivers XP has built in for wireless devices. If it has drivers these would be loaded at start up when Windows detects New Hardware.

I guess you have the mouse 'in line of sight' with the receiver - or am I thinking of IR devices - got none of those either!

I suggest a vist to the manufacturers web site - and check that the batteries are good.

There is no problem in uninstalling your existing mouse - just plug it in before you boot up again and Windows will find it.

So how would I find out what drivers it has for wireless + optical? If it didn't have any, could I possibly download them, then it would detect them when it plug them in?

Ok. It's made by a company called "Kye ", it's a "Genius Wireless TwinTouch + Optical" - it came as part of a kit (Mouse and Keyboard).

Well, i've sorted it!!! The problem was... WRONG PRINTING IN THE INSTRUCTIONS MANUAL!! You'd think they'd check before going to press. Never mind. Just goes to show people, go to the websites for up-to-the-date info. Regardless, thnaks giles & PeteC.

As with most things in life... you solve one problem... and another comes along...

    That's a relief :D

Out of interest - and for the benefit of others who might have the same problem, would you mind posting the manual error please. I have edited your thread title to aid future searches.

Sure, it's the least I can do. In the manual, it says:

"After you open Windows, please press the button under the reciever first and then press the button under the mouse and keyboard for channel setting. Make sure each button is pressed for at least three seconds "

This is wrong, the correction is (in my words):

Plug wires in and turn on your PC. Wait till windows is fully loaded. Once loaded, press the button under the reciever (JUST ONE PRESS, NOT FOR THREE SECONDS), then press the button under the mouse within six seconds (AGAIN, JUST ONE PRESS, NOT FOR THREE SECONDS) Press the reciever once more, and now press the keyboard button within six seconds. You should be able to move the mouse (it's alright if keyboard doesn't work yet). Insert the insatllation CD, and uhhh.... Install. Reboot and that's that. You can go an sit on your bed or couch and you can bring the mouse/keyboard with you and it'll still work. Need a good set of eyes or a big screen though.
