Logging Xp Pro machine into 2k server takes forever at the "applying settings" screen though it does eventually log in

Connecting 2K Pc using same cable, port etc works fine

Tried static IP and DHCP. DNS server is there as is WINS (you never know)

    Any guesses ?

The "applying settings" could be coming from a few different places. First may be local policy settings being applied. Check the Local Security Policy to see if any changes are being made. Second, Group Policy from the domain could be applying settings. Third, if your profile is setup as a roaming profile it will take much longer to load than if it were local.

Definitely no Group Policies on the domain - its fresh installed

Roaming profiles are on and I agree take longer to load but we are talking 4-5 minutes whereas 2K did it in around 40 seconds, also re-logging in doesnt speed up process and surely local copy of profile would have been created ?

Local Security Policy is possible but unless there's something weird by default i dont thinks so as the PCs are brand new build

Incidentally if you log in locally (i.e to PC not domain) the problem doesnt happen

Thought has just struck me to try HOSTS and LMHOSTS to see if its a name resolution thingy...

I upgraded my desktop at the office from WIN2K Pro to XP Pro and actually the boot up and log on are much faster.

A lot of times when it takes that long it's actually not logging on to the server but logging locally from a cached previous logon.

One other thing that seems to help is point your client machine to the server for it's first DNS address.
