Im Not totaly sure whats going on here, XP is a LOT differant,

BUT it best(almost always) to let programs install where they want to , which is normaly
    C:\program files\(name of the program)
they almost always put there shortcuts in the start menu for us, you can if you like place a shortcut to there uninstaller next to those.

I suggest you do uninstall spybot (turn off the bad download blocker first)
then install again, letting it install with the default path and options

never put Install's or exe''s in the start menu folders :)

    Regards

    Lonny:
I'll bite: what is 'turn off the bad download blocker first ".? And why do you want me to uninstall Spybot? Been reading a LOT of problems doing that.

Years ago I was taught to make an 'applications' folder, into which one placed the exe. That way if you wanted to reinstall an uninstalled program, you were already half way home.

Will get the exes out of the start menu and place them in the proper program files folder, after having made a shortcut which will appear on the StartMenu.

Any idea if Spybot is working on how to getr rid of 'DOS exploits'?

Finally, am really impressed with this forum. Not only with everyone's knowledge, but the SPEED of your responses. As much as I like all of you, here's hoping you won't be hearing from me real soon.

    Thanks--

The 'bad download blocker' he speaks of is in Spybot > the immumize page > the bottom option. Uncheck it.

With that done, you should not have problems removing Spybot so you can reinstall.

As an added note - I know we did some odd things with program installs over the years but with 2K and then XP, I've gone to just letting things load where they want. Seems to work lots better.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but Spybot does have an option to run with the first boot- even an option to delay the start up (I guess so it doesn't hang the system with the resource drain) in the expert settings. Wouldn't that go in the start menu? If Ms. Twitchell checks the expert settings in Advanced mode, she could just disable that, and run Spybot manually, without the need for an uninstall/reinstall. That would explain the BHO.

I always choose the "Custom Install" when I have a choice, even if I opt for the default settings anyway. You never know what your options are, unless you look. Like Newt, many of my smaller programs and apps are on my OS partition. XP is certainly stable enough! Like Ms. T, I was also taught to put downloaded programs in their own file, and install them from the hard drive. The convenience of just burning a cd for a restore, and not having to hunt them all down again, or to be able to revert to an older version, makes that method more practical.

For some odd reson thats hapening for a few people, first check for updates it might already be fixed,
If your scans still show it either just continue to fix it or exclude it.

Hi Johanna yes of cource it can have a runonce or a run, but
Gee (ive never seen this) I was hoping you would explain it :)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\STARTM~1\Programs\SCAN&F~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe
I might be able to rap my brain around a shortcut to spybotSD(.exe) in the start menu , but not the sdhelper
(PS this is my first day with XP Pro)

There are two programs that can be downloaded and used in conjunction with Spybot
SDHelper is the IE bad download blocker.
TeaTimer is a protection of overall system settings.

It makes sense that sdhelper, a BHO, wants to be ready for any instance of IE.

Google "sdhelper ", best explanation I found was in German (Thank you Google Toolbar!) http://www.giza-web.de/html/spybot-sd-teatimer-sdhelper.html

    NAV viruses

    Hello All:
Unchecked 'bad download blocker'. Have SDhelper and Teatime, but helper won't open up. Have checked the Advanced mode, or did I read that backwards.
Will try the Custom Install and see how I like it.
Off to work on the 'exes' that shoudn't be in the Start Menu.

Take Care, everyone..just let me know about the Spybot uninstall.

Quickly, does Spybot or SpySweeper need to run at StartUp? Adaware?

Sorry to be such a pest.

It would certainly give you long startup time if all of those were starting and scanning when you fired up the PC.

If you have up-to-date versions, scan periodically (weekly or something) and have used the immunize feature of Spybot and maybe loaded the list from IE-SPYAD, you shouldn't be bothered with more than an occasional piece of spyware so I'd say no need to run those apps that often.
