Hi, I'm new here, and in need of some help!!

I'm having constant trouble with my IE... My OS is Windows XP. When I'm surfing, it's ok for a couple of minutes, but then I constantly get an error message that says... "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem, and needs to close" It's constant, and it's about to make me nuts- Any ideas on what I can do to fix this problem?

I don't know what kind of info you need, to assist me in this ... if you can let me know, I'll do my best to answer your questions!

    TIA-
    Angie

    Hello, welcome to the boards.
I am going to make a guess and suggest you get Spybot, the link is below. Install it, then have it update itself. Then have it Check for Problems, have it remove everything already checked off.
Get HijackThis, the link is below. Unzip it into a folder. Have it do a Scan, when it is done the Scan button changes to Save Log. Click on that and it will open in Notepad, then copy and paste the entire log on here.
Both of these programs are free.
I think you have some sort of toolbar [hidden of course] or BHO doing it to you. This is a common problem, today.

First, copy HJT into it's own folder, it makes backups and the temp folder is not a good place for them.
Have all browser windows closed and remove these.

    Reboot.
Uninstall TV Media and Window Active in Add\Remove, reboot.
With MSN Messenger closed, delete these folders. They are what infected you.
    C:\Program Files\Window Active
    C:\Program Files\TV Media
    C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2
    C:\Program Files\WildTangent
    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

    Delete the file c:\Windows\Alchem.exe.
Go to Housecall, the link is below.
You were serously infected, I noticed you have no anti virus running, get AVG for free, the link is below. They ask for an email, rest assured they do not spam you, it is to give you the download link and the registration code.
A firewall would also be a good idea.

I couldn't find anything on these, anybody else here know? LadyAng, don't delete these yet, they may be legitimate, but have them removed with HJT just to be on the safe side.

Ok- I deleted the items you mentioned... Then I went to Housecall, and ran the scan. It found 5 infected files. 4 are called Troj Perfect.146 and 1 is called Troj Sclog.20. All were marked as "uncleanable ". The only options are to Clean, or Delete- Do I delete them?

*Edited to add- Also, it would not allow me to delete the TV Media folder. Said that it may be in use?

Download and install Move On Boot. It will add another right-click option to delete on next reboot. With that you should be able to right-click that folder and mark it for deletion then reboot and poof - gone.

I also suggest that until you are cleaned you turn off System Restore (and if I just missed that recommendation then oops). Any restore points you have right now are eaten up with the same stuff and are worthless. If you aren't sure how, Here is a quick how-to.

Move-on-Boot is a great little app, but will not work on folders. Files only. Use it to mark the files within for deletion, namely the executables(.exe). You will be able to delete the folder after reboot.
As Newt said, disable system restore.
You will need to show hidden files and folders.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Download and install Ad-aware. Immediately update and run configured for a custom full scan. Delete all it finds.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK. Reboot.

Run another online scan. This time create a log or copy/paste the results here so we can see which files are infected. I don't think anyone here would tell you to delete them without knowing which files they are. Some of them may be system files and would need to be replaced to keep your system functional. :)

Scan again with HJT and post a new log along with the online scan results.

Awk - thanks for catching that Dave. I have the app but had only used it on files. Sort of assumed it would do folders and we all know about assuming things.

You may want to use the "Immunize" feature in Spybot, and lock IE down, too. Check your security settings here. Also, what kind of AV and Firewall protection do you have? It is updated and enabled, right?
