I think XP-home has an event viewer. Maybe there is something being reported here that could explain what's going on. Take notice of the time you perform a test. The logs are time/date stamped.

If it does, it should be located under... Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ Administrative Tools \ Event Viewer.

In the event viewer, there are three logs; Application, Security, System. Your account will need administrative rights to view all three tabs. Look to see if there are any Warnings or Errors. If so, Select the message in the right pane and double click. This will open a dialog box explaining the message. Below the up and down arrow is a button with two pages on it. This copies the message to the clipboard. Once copied to the clipboard, open up notepad from the start\programs\accessories. Paste the message to notepad.

Now you can either print this out for research on the web...or cut-n-paste from notepad in to a thread here for us to look at.

btw...in my humble opinion (IMHO), this is probably the single BEST thing MS put into the OS. From an administrator's perspective, I use this feature all the time.

For research the web and aside from this forum, use http://www.google.com and http://support.microsoft.com .

While I am not certain which one is the culprit, these need to be addressed.

    Go to http://support.microsoft.com/

Click on the Knowledge Base and select your operating system
In the search box enter either/or both the Event ID and/or Event Source.
Sometimes a brief description can narrow the results.

There normally will be several returned possibilities. Wade through the results until one seems to match and take the neccessary steps as indicated in the knowledge base article.

I will try to check back over the weekend to see your progress.

    Ain't computers great :)

    Sound advice 24jedi.

Couple of minor things for you to pack into your bag of admin tricks & details though.

Quickest way to get to event viewer (unless you are using a 3rd party tool like Hyena [which I use, love, and highly recommend]) is start~run~eventvwr.

And while the three logs you mentioned are the basic ones, there can be quite a few others. Most common is

    Hey Newt,

I can one better you :D , Create your own Management Console with all the goodies you use...Not just Event Viewer...except, I don't know if this functionality is available in the Home version of XP, Creating a custom management console.

In Win2k and XP-Pron, type mmc at the Start\Run box, hit enter.

If you can't create you own, create a desktop short cut to the administrators folder in Control Panel.

Hey Newt...You were involved with this thread a few screens back. Any idea where this might be going ? Got any tricks up your sleeve ?

Go to the network folder in control panel and click on the advanced on the toolbar of the folder and go to advanced settings and see if printer and filesharing and client for microsoft networks are bound to tcp/ip. One of those getting unchecked will mess up the network. Enable netbios over tcp/ip on both machines also.
I've always thought you had to have the Guest Account enabled and passworded when you are using XP Home since it is simple networking. I've never networked two XP Homes, just home and pro but I disabled simple networking so I didn't use the guest account.
Another thing has anyone been messing with any Services? It is worth a look to compare them.

Open the Network Connections Folder in Control Panel. Then go to the toolbar at the top of the folder and click on advanced. Click advanced settings. Click your connection type and the bindings show up below.

ipconfig /all is a good place to check also.

If you are using the wizard:
Tell the Wizard that the computers connect to the Internet "through a
residential gateway" (router). Other options, like "directly to the
Internet" or "through a network hub" will block file and printer
    sharing.

Yep. Have you done any repairs on either computer? With the Windows XP CD. I messed up my network that way once. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];329441
the "workaround" is what I had to do. It seems mine was hanging also. I was going round and round changing and deleting and nothing would work until I did this.
    WORKAROUND
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

If you cannot reinstall SP1, verify that the Objectname string value is set to LocalSystem in the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan

After you do this, delete the following registry subkeys. These subkeys on a Windows XP-based computer that does not have SP1 installed can cause the symptoms that this article describes:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26

To delete these keys, follow these steps.

Note This procedure includes steps to back up the registry keys before you modify them.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan

On the File menu, click Export.
In the File Name box, type exported rasman key, and then click Save.
In the RasMan key, locate and then click the ObjectName string value.

If this value is not set to LocalSystem, follow these steps:
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
In the Value data box, type LocalSystem, and then click OK.
Locate and then double-click the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25

On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the selected registry key.
Repeat steps 7 to 9 to delete the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26

Quit registry editor, and then restart your computer.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
In a nutshell You will have to navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP and delete the folders numbered 25 & 26, then reboot

Maggie, I finally got back to the network problem. For some reason the problem was only on my computer to my wife's. It disappeared soon after I received your WORKAROUND. Well I encountered the same problem from my wife's computer to mine. So I applied the workaround and it worked. Thank you very much.

    One Last Word
I don't know what fixed the problem. I do know that I have tried hundreds of things to fix it to no avail. Now for some reason all three computers are networking fine. I just think they were trying to intimidate me but because I would not quit they gave up and started to work. Thanks to all who participated in this quest.
I still don't know what fixed the problem!
