Windows XP home machine. IE6 version 6.2600 SP1
The machine can connect to the internet but IE will not let you surf anywhere. It says Page can not be displayed. Have tired using the address bar in My computer, same result.
Have looked at the hosts file, nothing there.

    Run latest stinger, nothing found

    Hijack this, nothing odd either.

Obviously OE is tied in with IE hence email cna't be collected either.

    Any clues?

I did get it to work for a moment, by removing some settings under internet options, connections, lan settings. But when I went back to the PC 20 minutes later and it would dial up , but once again wouldn't browse.

Have removed IE in 'Add remove progs' and then put it back, no difference.

One odd thing is that the short cut on teh desktop doesn't say Internet Explorer but says 0231+0 instead??

Have the machine on my network now, still cant access any web pages but could PING a Freeserve DNS server ip address but couldn't ping www.jolt.co.uk

I reckon this is a DNS issue. How do you fix DNS??

Am running sfc/scannow to see if that helps.

Have done a ipconfig /all and it has all the entries it needs for my network, no empty ones at all.

    Probably a DNS issue

I ran into this awhile back. Turned out that my ISP had changed DNS servers -- and I didn't read the email. Corrected DNS entries and surfed away.

Your problem sounds similar. Is the network a home network or domain type? Also, if you post your ipconfig /all file here, someone can likely help you. I'm not an expert, but I'd be glad to check what I do know.

I've checked the DNS server ips for Freeserve (looked on their webby earlier)and have added them in the tcp/ip settings. But made no difference

Got it to dial up using my telephone socket, connected as it does, but still no web pages.

    sfc/scannnow - made no difference
Flushed dns - made no difference
added in freeserve dns server ips - made no difference

Machine still says its connected but no pages will display and email cant be got.

I also couldn't get it to see webpages on my home network either.??

Not sure if seeing the ipconfig /all will help as I can't surf using the machine if its networked or dialing up and the settings are totally differnt each time, DHCP for netowrk and not for dialup.

    SORTED IT! :D

It was the Devils work that is known in the real world as NORTONS INTERNET SECURITY 2004

This seems to block absolutely everything. I disabled it all and low and behold there were web pages. :)

Thing is all of it has to be disabled. Can't get away with 1 part (like just the firewall) as sites like www.microsoft.com windows updates don't work!!

I will be recommending the owner of this pc gets rid of Nortons.

    Bloody thing! :)
