    Hello,

Whevever I attempt to send an email using an email account that I had set up in outlook express, I receive this message:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'bp433', Server: 'smtp.scn.org', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I can retreive email using this account. The problem is that I can't send email using outlook express. So a few questions here. What exactly does the above error message mean? second, is it possible to set this email account so to compose and send using outlook express?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    jackson

    jackson--Is this something new?
Basically what the message is telling you is that something is either wrong with your email sending connection to the email server or the email server is down. Since you are receiving OK, it sounds like the former.
You should phone your email service provider, tell them the problem and probably walk through the settings in various tabs in OE Tools|Accounts|Properties. (On the Server tab, is the Incoming Mail line something like "mail.scn.org "?)
Tutorials on setting up OE are here (but you will need some info from the email service provider).

Two other 'tricks' that often work in these circumstances ....

    1. Create another Dial up Networking Connection to your ISP from scratch - just call it ISP 2 or whatever and try sending using that connection. If it works delete the original one.

    2. Set up your OE mail account from scratch as a new account - mail 2 or whatever and if that works delete the original account.

Here is a little more information

    Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately, my ISP will only allow me to dial up using a pre-specified dial up connection (in other words, no other connection set up will work but the one they have pre set up).

Anyway I have emailed my email service provider to get more information.

Here is the information that I found so far from SCN (email provider):

You can login to any other POP email server on the Internet, and read your email there, with this service. But you can send email only with your SCN account. To send email from this form, please login to the mail.scn.org server.

And then reading further I find this:

Using Eudora and Other POP Email Programs with SCN </help/email/popmail.html> explains another way to send and receive email through your SCN account from your PC, using a standard email program and a PPP dialup connection from your Internet provider </help/isp/>.
So I'm confused. I have a dial up from netzero. (Is that a PPP dial up? )However their was no mention of outlook express (Is outlook express a POP Email program?)

So it looks as if the answer to both questions is yes then I might be in luck.

Basically, you hit it on the nailhead. You can receive multiple accounts. But you can only SEND via NetZero's server. All e-mail you send will have the NetZero return address.

This is fairly standard for security reasons.

    SCN responded with an answer:

    RAYH,

Yep, thats what it looks like. Here is the procedure for others who might be in a similar situation:

    SCN response:

It is best to use your ISP to send mail. To do this:
Open Outlook Express -> Tools -> Accounts.
Select the account then click Properties.
Select the Servers tab and put the name of the SMTP server given to you by
your ISP in the Outgoing mail box.

    jackson--
Just curious why you would not want to follow that suggestion (enter "mail.scn.org" in the Outgoing mail line on the Properties|Servers tab) and use the scn.org email service.
