Have PowerDVD, has always autoplayed when inserting DVD. Now when I insert DVD, receive a busy cursor status for about 30 seconds, program does not load, cursor disappears. I manually load program, open close Drive E with DVD and same response. I use "choose source selection" option and direct to E and receive message "No Disc in Drive E ". The program works fine for reading / playing DVD movies stored on HD, but not from the DVD player. I previously check Drive E properties, and discovered it NO longer listed PowerDVD. I used XP TweakUI 2.10 / My Computer / Autoplay / Handlers / create option, but I'm not sure I filled in the correct info.. if someone could provide the correct input info, very much appreciated.. It does show on up as a choice now. Not sure if this is a ... file association, a required value / codec for DVD player to read DVD's or just don't have it setup correctly as a handler with drive and PowerDVD.
    TIA

    Dennis,

In the Autoplay Handler dialogue box type in a Description e.g. PowerDVD in the first box.

Then hit the Change Program button and browse for the PowerDVD executable

Leave the Args box to take care of itself?

Then check one or more of the Supported Media boxes.

    Voila!

You say that the choice now appears on Autoplay - will the drive play DVD's now?

If not I suggest uninstalling PowerDVD and removing the drive in Device Manager, rebooting and reinstalling PowerDVD.

The fact that the drive does not see a disk does suggest a possible problem with the drive.

    Hi Pete

Thank you kindly for your response.
Fortunately I had setup the handler correctly (total luck). It was the 3rd input line "Args ", which left me clueless, so I left it alone. When I set it up I had selected "Video and DVD" media types. When I insert a MPG / MPEG CD disc, PowerDVD will autoload, but issues "format not supported" which would be expected (2x other video programs with proper codec read the CD fine). Drive E aknowledges the disc, and correctly states a format issue. Further testing results in BOTH D and E can read ALL normal CD formats... but when a DVD is inserted... same problem continues.. No disc in drive / Insert disc. I also have Nero 6 full edtion. All CD/Audio/data/burning work fine, but again when reading a DVD disc (via Nero ShowTime) same problem continues. I have one concern. About a month ago I installed Alcohol 120% (v1.4.8), default settings, let it set up (1) virtual drive assigned to "F ". I have not had time to use it yet, but could this have caused / created a problem. Another limitation I have, I can not "uninstall / reinstall" PowerDVD. Was bundled with PC purchase with no physical program disc.

    Hi Dennis

I'm not familiar with Alcohol - at least not the software version :), but it's possible that it is interfering in some way if your problems coincided with it's installation.

As two programs - PowerDVD and Nero both have problems reading DVD's it suggests that the source of the trouble is elsewhere. I guess the drive is OK as it reads CD's.

As you cannot uninstall PowerDVD it might be worth trying the trial of WinDVD - it will co-exist with PowerDVD - I have/use both on my m/c, WinDVD actually came with the mobo.
