An unannounced command has appeared in the fourth position of my IE Tools drop-down menu.

    "Edit with Guitar Sidekick "
    This points to C:\documents\user\locals\temp\WZSE2.TMP\....

This of course is an anomaly and I know , by searching, which key is at fault in my Registry.

    Hkey_local_machine\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\...

Can I safely delete the data held in the various elements of this key?

scots--I have no experience with Guitar Sidekick. If you installed such a program (which at first glance seems legitimate
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q="guitar+sidekick"
), maybe it is normal that it installs this entry in Tools.
You say this points to a Temp file, so there should be no problem deleting it, since theoretically it should delete itself after several days.
However, it never hurts to back up this Registry key before deleting and see what happens. (You could also just disable WZSE2.TMP by renaming or putting into Recycle Bin.) After a week or so, if all is well then you should be able to delete.
You could run a spyware detector (AdAware or SpybotS&D) just to be sure.
As far as WZSE2.TMP is concerned, there is not much info available
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=WZSE2.TMP

    IE6 Tools menu errata ...

Thank you Jim for your posting, yes, I have legitimately installed the application Guitar Sidekick, but this is a Musical Manuscript program with no relevance to IE6. I think it is a glitch.

scots--Programs have an annoying habit of installing shortcuts, etc. in strange places.
Have you rebooted since installing the program. That gets rid of many Temp files. (In fact, it is not a good idea to get rid of Temp files right after installing a new program, before you reboot.)
If you have not already deleted (or sequestered in Recycle) what happens when you click on this item in IE Tools?
And if you open the program and look around things like Options, you may find a setting that did this.

    IE6 Tools menu errata...

    Thank you Jim.

When the erroneous 'Edit with Guitar sidekick' comand is selected in Tools menu an error message is generated ... "File not found. Please check path ... "

When I inspected the 'Options' in the Guitar Sidekick application I found amongst the options a "Check for new versions or updates" selected, perhaps that is the culprit?

    scots--
Have you rebooted after doing that? Often entries from drop down menues will disappear when they do not work.
Could be, although that does not fit with "Edit with Guitar Sidekick" naming. Did you uncheck anyway (and probably click Apply|OK)? Then Reboot. You can always recheck if you want the updates check.
If the item in IE Tools is still there, have you done the disabling/sequestering of that WZSE2.TMP file suggested earlier? As mentioned, a temp file can usually always be deleted.
Do I understand that this WZSE2.TMP file is indeed on your PC? I ask, since if you deleted your Temp files (including WZSE2.TMP ) immediately after installing the program and before reboot, you may have corrupted the installation. It would not hurt to uninstall Sidekick (Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs)--NOT delete--this program and reinstall.

Thank you Jim for your kind interest and replies.

All that you have mentioned applies, however the initial query was whether it was safe to edit the Registry.

In the end I used a little utility IE_Doctor. http://www.axesoft.com/iedr

This has the option to remove 'extra' commands, which it lists.

It may well have been a malicious web page which caused the error or perhaps IE was running when I installed the application Guitar Sidekick.

    Again, many thanks.
