AOL to release new version of Netscape

America Online said Thursday that it plans to release a new version of its Netscape Web browser this summer, though the effort does not appear to signal a return to major browser development work for the company.

An AOL representative said that the new software will be based on Mozilla 1.7 code developed by Netscape's open-source offshoot. She described it as a relatively minor upgrade that will include a few security patches, but leave the interface mostly unchanged. "This is not a huge step forward," she said.

I wonder what you and other experienced users feel about this statement, if just adapted to: from Mozilla1.4 to Mozilla1.7?
I have not found anything exciting as the Mozilla versions where coming out. I use the programs for basic web surfing and mail. Nothing more. I see improvements, but nothing to broadcast from the top of a mountain.

    Hi Westside,

I found all the information in this article extremely disappointing. If you read between the lines, AOL might be saying this is a one-time shot to get rid of the major bugs in Netscape 7.1, i.e., Resource Leak, GRE Install Bug, compreg.dat bug, etc. This also might be in response to the petition signed by many Netscape users, and presented to AOL. If this article is to be believed, then I would say that the return of Netscape development isn't going to happen.

If you are looking for impovements and the best browser software, I would recommend looking at Mozilla's standalone products. I rate Firefox very highly and better than the Mozilla full product. Thunderbird is also a good e-mail client, though not an Outlook beater yet (for ease of use rather than security - for security who'd use Outlook!).

Personally I think seperating e-mail from web browsing was a good move.
