I'm trying to connect my tower with a laptop (both with 98se) using a Linksys card in my tower and a Linksys pcmcia card in the laptop (cat5 cable).

I've never done a tcp/ip connect except with dun; and to Ghost the laptop requires tcp/ip.

After reading some threads in here, some of the terms used are unknown to me.

Is someone willing to help me, using simple language and steps in how to go about this?

Your help will be GREATLY appreciated! :)

I'm not sure exactly what requirements Ghost has so some of this may not be necessary but it will all work.

You will need to be using a 'crossover' cable to allow two 'like' devices to talk to each other. If you need information on this, we can give specifics but your best option is a computer store and ask for a "cross-over patch cable ". You will know you have the right thing if you compare the connectors at either end and the wires do not all go directly thru. One pair should be 'crossed' so just look for different colors in a couple of places.

On each PC, set up your network card with Client for Microsoft Networking, File and Printer Sharing, and TCP/IP.

Go to TCP/IP Properties and set up one PC with
    IP Address 192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    and the other with
    IP Address 192.168.0.2
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
(see the picture below for what the setup screen will look like).

Give each PC a different computer name. 15 or fewer characters, no spaces, no characters except letters, numbers, and the - or _ symbols.

That should do it for you.

    Thanks :) Newt!

    I can understand it :D

About the cable, I have a cat5 cable and the colors are different on each end... reading from the left of each end looking at the bottom...

orange orange green blue blue green black black
green green orange blue blue orange black black

will this work? or do I need to get another one?

another question... when the card and drivers are installed, isn't there supposed to be a light showing on the card when the computer is running even tho it isn't hooked up to the other computer? this card has four lights.

the reason I'm asking about the light, when I had two desktops hooked up several years ago, it seems to me that when the computer was booted one of the lights came on even when the 2nd computer wasn't on. (or is this just my imagination??)

    thanks!:) for your help :D

That looks like a cross-over cable.

The lights should come on when you connect. Whether you get a light on when you start up depends on the network card I think. The main thing is you get LEDs lighting up when the two PCs are connected and they flash when they are communicating.

    Update: Success!

Just to let you know, I never did get tcp/ip to work. Neither could I get the pcmcia card installed properly.

So I found out from the Symantec knowledge base that I could use a high-speed bidirectional LPT cable - which I have - made the boot floppys for both machines... and got it to work!!

Took over an hour cuz the laptop is only 133mhz but it is done. Now to burn it to a cd and make a boot floppy to access it if ever needed.

After struggling with the tcp/ip for days, it's gonna take someone much smarter than me to figure that one out!

Thanks! so MUCH for all your help! ReggieB and Newt:D
