    No good deed goes unpunished!

A friend of mine's computer sort of blow up, Okay it wouldn't boot.
What was funny about it, it gave a blue screen but before you could
read it would try and reboot!

Well I had this brilliant idea to drop her drive in to my system
as a slave drive and backup the data and then deal with her drive.

Well every thing went perfect until I removed her drive
    from my computer!

    1) Now my computer takes about 60 seconds to get to a sign on screen
before it was less than 12 seconds.

    2) The whole Windows environment "Feels Slow ".
Once I'm in a application there is not speed reduction.
But launching any application feels like the machine is in molasses.

I have saved "System Resort" points.
Would this be a good time to turn back the clock?

I can't believe my rocket ship Window XP Pro system
has turned into a dog just because I installed
another drive as a slave to backup some data!

I don't know but it feels like it's still looking
for that drive in every task windows does!

    Thanks
    Bill

PS I'm current on my anti-virus software.
Haven't check for spy stuff but don't think that's it.
Nothing changed but adding than removing that drive.

    Hello Bill,

Probably still looking for the extra drive.

If its still in the Device Manager - need to uninstall, fairly certain the HD has to be connected for that.

Did you have to change pin settings on you HD to accomodate the slave?

Do you have a System Restore just before or fairly close to putting in the HD? IF so, try that - you can always undo the restore.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles

No this was a pretty cool set of jumpers.
One was labeled "Cable" and because it
was on the second connector it was the
    Slave! Pretty cool huh?

Yes I do have a Restore System point.

I just was checking to make sure before
    I rolled the system back!

    Hope this works!

I'm quessing here, is this a Dell?

If you think that the HD settings are Ok, that would mean that the OS is either looking for files/settings from the extra HD and a restore to the original config is in order.

If I did something like this, restoring back would be part of my procedure.

There is always the possibilty that you got infected with malware - and I think you ought to check.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles

Actually it was a Compaq Presario

    I am a believer!
I believe in "System Restore" points!
I believe they saved my system!
I believe they saved my butt!
    I believe!

Okay, I didn't got to church on Sunday, could you tell?

    Hey Charles I did a virus scan of drive E: & F:
looking for virals & wormy critters. Non found.
Actually I think that hurt me because the anti-virus
    was looking for drives E: & F:

    Thanks for all the help.
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

Thanks for posting back - one of the irritants around here is people not getting back about whether they were helped or not.

Dell has cable select, that's why the quess.
