    Hey everyone,

I'm not sure if this is an isolated IE problem or a bigger Windows problem, but hopefully someone out here in cyberspace can help me out.

I recently installed an Ethernet card in my computer to take advantage of an ADSL connection in the place I moved into. About the time I installed that, I started getting illegal operation messages in Windows Explorer/Internet Explorer. These are the details from a Windows Explorer message:
    â€â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€

The IEXPLORE message is pretty much the same, save for a few different numbers in the "EBX" row and in the "Stack dump" area.

This happens when I open up a Windows Explorer or an Internet Explorer window. The first folder/web page opens up fine â€" it's just when I try to move past that when the illegal operation message pops up, i.e. opening a subfolder in Windows Explorer, or clicking on a link or typing in a new URL in IE.

I've been trolling this BBS for a day or two now, trying to find a solution, but I find I'm sometimes getting lost in the computer jargon. I think I found someone with a similar problem where it had to do with the sound card and/or the modem, but I want to make sure before I go performing any major surgery. I have run the IE Repair Tool and re-installed IE 5.5, to no avail.

I'm running Windows 98SE on an AMD-K6 300 MHz processor and 32MB RAM. I'm not certain what I have for video or sound cards.

Anyway, thanks for your time and trouble. Please let me know if you need any more information.

    Cheers,
    Glenn

    Daizy,

That looks very applicable. :) I will try that out when I get home from work and see what happens. Thanks!

    Cheers,

OK, I think I'm about halfway there. I disabled the Windows Sound System, which was using the driver that was causing problems, and now I can surf the Net no problem ... just with no sound.

The Microsoft article then said to get the C-Media Windows 98 sound card driver version 4.10.00.0152 or later from the C-Media Web site, but I can only find a version 2.0 for Win98. There's a version 4.17 for Win2000/ME â€" can I download and use that one? Or do I have to find the driver somewhere else?

    Thanks again,
    Glenn

Nope. You need the 98 one. I've just did a quick search. Perhaps try here?

    *edit*

I found the right driver and installed it, and now everything's working perfectly. Yay!

Thanks again for all your help,

Yer Welcome, Yer Welcome, Yer Welcome, Yer Welcome, Yer Welcome, Yer Welcome, Yer Welcome, Yer Welcome, Yer Welcome, Yer Welcome.
Think nothing of it. No problemo (That's Spanish. YES it is!) My pleasure. De nada. (Pretty sure that's French. Could be Russian)
Thrilled you got it working again. Thanks so much for the grins and giggles, and taking the time to post back and let us know.
    :D
