See if IE6 is in add/remove programs. If so, click to remove and you wil get an option to repair.

    History deleted on exit

I seem to be having a similar problem and have tried some (those applicable to my system) and I'm still having no history displayed upon exit of IE.

    Here is what I know.

    New "C" drive installed
Running Win 2000 Professional - all up to date with all service packs
IE v 6 all up todate
Replaced AV software FROM McAffee to Norton System Works

Every time IE is close the history is deleted.
I have the date set to 30 but have also had it set to 0 then to 20.
I also have unchecked empty tmp files upon exit.

    I could use some assistance.

    Tlmhdakota, Welcome to WindowsBBS! :)

What system do you have? About the only thing I can think of that hasn't been suggested for this problem so far is scanning for viruses and spyware/adware/malware. So I'm going to suggest it now. Download and install both Spybot (version 1.3) and Ad-aware (build 6.181) from the links in my signature. Immediately update both and scan. Delete all Spybot finds that is prechecked. Delete all Ad-aware finds. Ad-aware should be configured for a custom full scan. Reboot when done. Scan with both RAV and Housecall. Please let us know what, if anything, is found and removed by the above programs.

    I found the bugger!

Ok I didn't but once I let hubby know I wanted my history back and that I was about to remove Nortons System works and put back Corporate which we had on the other Hard drive and had no problems with. Anyway he looked in registry this am and found something that said to delete history.

Removed it and now it works fine.
I'm running zone alarm, nortons and earthlink's adware/spy ware etc I think I'm pretty protected but will look into the other programs you mentioned in your sig line.

Thank you for all your help!
    Tracy

Um, Dave...Hubby made have had his reasons for clearing History along with the browser close... ;) It's important to keep out of those "mysterious" registry settings! :D (Hush up, you may start WWIII at the Tlmhdakota house! )

    Tracy,
Thanks for posting back and telling us how you fixed it!

That thought never crossed my mind, Johanna. I guess I can be a bit naive at times. Bet that sounds funny coming from a guy with 14 kids. Strange how a woman's mind works. Or maybe it's just yours? ;) Might have started WWIII, now that you put the idea in her head. :D

Actually, I was thinking it may be some new nasty doing it, since we suddenly have 2 going with the same problem, and nothing seems (seemed) to be working. It wouldn't surprise me if it was either, although I can't imagine the purpose or benefit for the nasty.

    History folder still doesn't work

Maybe I missed something but I ran Spybot S&D 1.2, Ad-aware 6, AVG 6.0 Anti-Virus, and Earthlink SpyBlocker. They all showed zero. I even ran Spybot for updates and it said there were no updates available. I signed on today and had Friday and Today's sites listed. I signed off and came back later and it only shows today's sites. My History seems to do the same thing Tlmhdakota does when you close IE6 my history gets deleted.

Well, I just looked on my 98 PC and didn't see where history would be set to clear, but my history is working right too. If you're comfortable enough in the registry, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main. With the main folder selected, look in the right pane for an entry that might suggest clearing history on close. Check for the same thing at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main. If you don't see anything and are comfortable doing so, click the main folder, then click registry>export on the toolbar. Save it to your desktop as CUIEMain.txt and LMIEMain.txt, file type All Files (*.*), then open it with notepad and copy/paste it here for our forum members to look over.

Spybot has a new version available. You can get it from my sig.

and it may very well be a "nasty" at work, and the History is a side effect.

Dakota's was set to clear, and is now fixed. Kasea's only option, at this point, if History is important, is to repair IE or reinstall Windows, since all the scans are coming up clear, and the problem keeps happening. The only other thing that comes to mind is a loose or failing CMOS battery??

    Kasea,

    Do you have TweakUI installed?

If you do, make sure you do NOT have 'Clear Internet Explorer history' checked under the 'Paranoia' tab.

History folder still doesn't work Win 98SE ?

Wiindows 98SE came loaded on my computer. Can I uninstall it and reinstall it with the CD that came with it (without problems)? Will uninstalling and reinstalling correct the History problem.

This thread is long enough and I'm lazy enough that I don't really remember if you've already removed and reinstalled the browser. If not, try that before you start messing with the OS. Just save your favorites folder first so you don't lose all of that and I'd save a copy of all the email and address book just in case the IE removal takes OE with it. Then add/remove in control panel and you should be able to get rid of the browser and then load it again. Hopefully that will put things right again.

If not, easier to try a 'repair install' of 98 which means installing it over your existing copy. That often fixes strange problems and should not destroy any of your personal data. I'd still suggest making a safety copy of documents, email, address book, etc. somewhere else.

Once you have your personal stuff somewhere safe, you should be able to put the CD in, select to install, and put a new copy OVER the old one. The default will be to make a fresh copy so if you have it in Windows now, the suggestion will be to put the new one in Windows.000 or something. Just specify that you want it to go into Windows.

If the repair install does not help then you are probably looking at formatting the drive and doing a fresh install of 98. You will also have to reinstall all the updates and all your programs again so it's a fairly major task. Safe enough and not too hard but time consuming.

Note: I've been away from 98 for a good while so you might want to wait on one of the 98 gurus to make a comment here. I could easily have forgotten something vital. You might locate the account for WelshJim and PM him with a link to the thread so he can take a look. He's one regular on here who still runs 98 and knows lots of stuff. Billy Bob is another. I know there are others but those names came immediately to mind as folks who are smart, helpful, and like to mess with 9X systems.
