I ran a program called Easy Cleaner on my XP install and selected to delete "Unecessary Files ". The scan completed and found hundreds of files and I deleted them. They were mainly .BAK .TMP and .CHK files. However now none of my OfficeXP applications will work anymore - it tries to re-install components?
What have I lost and are these cleaner programs highlighting files that are necessary?

More detailed information would be helpful here with so many of the cleaner programs out there today. If your Easy Cleaner is the one by Toni Arts, the default method for deletion is the recycle bin. Check there for your other missing files, since any .bak .tmp or .chk files can be safely deleted. You may also want to check your Easy Cleaner folder for an Undo folder.

If that doesn't work, try the system restore feature in Windows XP.

    I have been there but I didn't use a reg cleaner ...... ;) ...... I managed to s*c*r*e*w it up manually!

    I found out that in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data , there are two files; data.dat and DATA.BAK.

Office doesn't work without DATA.BAK and since making that experience ...... ...... I leave all *.bak files alone. There aren't too many of them so, it's not a space issue.

My DATA.BAK is dated 2001-02-10 which means that it came from the CD during installation.

    Silverwork,
You're welcome ...... :) ...... and thanks for posting back with the good news!

Your case demonstrates that it's a good idea to leave cleaned out files in the bin for a while until everything is confirmed to work OK.

What version of EasyCleaner are you running? This problem was fixed in recent versions. Click the link in my sig. below for the latest version.
Typing data.bak in the skip box will avoid this file being deleted as well.
Ofice will easily replace this file from the CD as requested as well.

Yes but then we are none the wiser afterwards and will either not use that regcleaner again or will let it make the same mistake again.

It's better to identify the file and exclude it from the task.

    Christer,
no software is perfect, that is why that Office XP problem was fixed sometime ago. It pays to update software on a regular basis. Toni Helinius fixed that particular fault. See the Blacklist info on the web site.
I have yet to find a perfect registry and unnecessary files cleaner, but EasyCleaner comes closer than most.

    Paul,
several discussions on this board indicate that You're right!

Some people don't need a reg cleaner to mess up. I went by the same information that rcerrato gave in this thread, that files with certain extensions are safe to delete.
I came across files with *.bak and *.tmp extensions that are vital and can not be deleted. The *.tmp file was in a GPS evaluation program and it was a "place holder" to avoid deletion of a directory. Probably badly written code ...... ......

I think it's common to delete *.log files and I believe that if an install log is deleted, that action may be the cause of trouble uninstalling the application.

Hi ... I was told not to even download easy cleaner because it wasn't writen that well , Also i would believe it would take a great many of years of computer experience to write a good registry program ... It is made by Tomi Art 21 years old. He is doing a good job so far but it takes a lot of experience to fix a registry. When it comes to registry i would to perfer a paid software type were there is pros behind it ... but hey that just my opinion...

I've used Easy Cleaner for a long time and haven't run into anymore snags using it than any other registry cleaner. I wouldn't be afraid of it.
At the time I first downloaded Easy Cleaner, Toni Helenius was something like 12 or 13 years old. Don't remember for sure. Either way, I'd say he's had a fair amount of experience with programming. I've use a couple other apps of his and had no problems with them. This is just my way of saying I think he knows what he's doing. ;)
