Both computers would not connect to internet last night. I have cable connection. After unplugging modem from battery supply and replugging it in the main computer now works. However the one in basement will not connect to internet. I have a router that is only 2 months old and have reset it and also unplugged and plugged it back in. Still no luck. Also not sure if this pertains to it also but my battery power back up has the red light on that says wiring fault. Would this possibly be the problem??? How do I fix both of these??I am totally clueless!! Thanks in advance.

OK, let me go over the UPS (battery backup) wiring fault first. If you are unsure of your electrical skills at all, as you claim, don't mess with the power in the walls. You could hurt or kill yourself, set your house on fire, damage your equipment, and various other dangerous and unpleasant things. Find a person who knows what they are doing to fix that.

Now, with that said as a qualifier, my own UPS has a "wiring fault" indicator. I live in an old house (built 1956) that has only two-prong wiring, so I have a three-prong UPS plugged into a two-prong outlet. The UPS is complaining because it cannot find a ground. I cannot easily fix this until I upgrade my home electrical system (next year, I think).

But the UPS will work just fine, and delivers battery backup power as is needed. What it might not be able to do is provide surge suppression or proper isolation. I understand this and can live with this.

For the basement computer, try powering the system off completely then back on (not the same as a restart). If you've already done this and it still doesn't work, please post more details, like:
-The operating system you are running.
-If your network is wired or wireless
-The brand and model of your modem or other networking equipment
-If you are using Internet Connection Sharing or a hardware router to share the connection

This will help the folks on this board give you steps to try and fix the problem.

Yep. In 15+ years of supporting Microsoft based PC's, the cold start reboot has truly made me the heroic figure the users perceive me to be. ;)
