System file checker identified following files may be corrupted.
    SYSWIZ.386

    PCDLIB32.DLL

    location:C:\windows system
You should restore this file from your installation disks.

Should I really insert original installation disks and start over?? I hope not.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

It's a while since I ran 98, but does not system file checker give you the facility to extract individual files?

Yes, see this MS KB Article.

SFC is a tool that must be run before and after every install/uninstall on your PC.
If you just run it periodically it can/will detect files that are NOT corrupted.

If you are not having any issues with the PC, do nothing.

If you are, post back exactly what problems you are having.

When I insert the recovery disk, and select "restore from M;\diag" I get the following ," the file was not found verify that you have selected the correct "restore from location." and try again "

The problem I am hoping this will improve is diminishing free memory. I'm supposed to have 256MB. I start out with about 143MB, 56%. After loading OE and IE it drops to about 81MB,32%. If I run spy bot, ad aware, RFA,etc it drops to about 10%, and eventually the blue screen.

It's nothing real serious I suppose, just exasperating.

neil--Neither of these files are MS files or therefore likely to be on your Win98 CD. (I do not have them on my PC and I run Win98FE.)
Maybe you can get them here
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=PCDLIB32.DLL
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=SYSWIZ.386
Or you could uninstall and then reinstall the programs involved.
Somehow I question if they are the source of your problems.
Maybe just leave these files alone.
However, diminishing "free memory" could be another problem.
    Perhaps read here
    http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Index.htm
You certainly want to limit the number of programs runnings if you are not using them.

PCDLIB32.DLL is by Eastman Kodak - Paint Shop Pro, for example, uses it.
I don't recognise SYSWIZ.386 and Welshjim's link doesn't throw much light on it.

OE and IE should only consume about 12Mb so your drop of 62Mb is definite grounds for concern.

I'd be inclined to clean boot and then load OE and IE. If they consume about 12Mb then you'll need to look at what is loading normally - you have a fair amount loaded at boot - I thought I had a lot with 100Mb.

PS If they still consume 62Mb then a lot of heads will scratch here.

I installed 2ea 128mb sticks 2 years ago. Althoughthe properties tab has only indicated 252 mb since day one. Don't know what happened to the missing 4mb, but didn't worry about it.
After a clean boot i show 144mb, after loading oe an ie, it indicates 109 mb. My start up menu seems normal.

I would post back a HJT log for review.

In general, "depleting" ram is not an issue. Ram is there to be used. Your missing 4K may be an onboard video card?

But, you mention "and eventually the blue screen "

What blue screen? What is the error message?

Something is amiss here. You mentioned earlier “I start out with about 143MB†and then you say you have 144Mb with a clean boot - don't you have anything in the Run keys and StartUp? Anyway, OE and IE are still consuming 35Mb which is way too high.

I'd go along with WhitPhil and knock out a HijackThis log and, while you are at it, a StartUpList from HJT's 'Config.../Misc Tools'.

I see nothing bad in the above logs, While MSGLOOP.EXE, MSG32.EXE are listed as running processes, and there is not an apparent startup for them, these should be for your sound card.

I do see two things that you do not need.

    TaskMonitor = c:\windows\taskmon.exe
I would remove it from startup, and delete all the files in the C:\Windows\Applog folder.

    [C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp]
    MemoKit.lnk = C:\Program Files\MemoKit\mk.exe
Win98 does a good job of managing memory by itself, read this and you'll understand this a bit.
If you want something to monitor usage of memory, windows includes a simple tool, System Monitor or C:\Windows\Sysmon.Exe. You can configure this to show what you like to see.
To show everything loaded into memory in real time, use Wintop

My purpose is not to open a long discussion, but some would disagree with that, especially since neil runs Win98. If neil uses Disk Defragmenter on a regular basis, perhaps not to delete?

I do admit using Taskmon can have some advantages, especially when using and older computer with less than a 233 Mhz processor. With faster computers and drives, we are talking about a few microseconds difference opening a program.

Ah, I'd forgotten about toolbars and plugins. My figures for the amount of memory consumed by OE and IE are without any additional features. Consider how much memory IE consumes on loading. One of those 'suitcases' may be grabbing a lot of memory.

Thanks for all the informative help and suggestions.

I removed Task mon and memo kit from start up. Will run that way for week,or so and see what happens.
